She squeezes Alice's hand tightly, "When I went to the ball, I was not sure what to expect. My friend the Comtesse talked to me before it about how Mister Lefroy truly does not have any money of his own, which worried me. Then when I arrived, I did not see him. He surprised me in the midst of a dance and we had a strange conversation that did not end terribly well. I chose to rest outside, but Lady Gresham found me and berated me for what she saw as my foolishness. I found myself agreeing with her so I could leave. Then I went outside once more and my whole world changed for I spoke with Mister Lefroy and we are going to find a way, because I have never felt such affection before."
Her words are not as controlled as they normally are, because so much happened that night and Jane at times does not believe it is all true.
