Alice skips into Milliways with a stack of magazines, advertising a variety of prom dresses. She hops onto a stool and pulls out a pen, circling dresses from Milan, Paris, New York City.

It looks like she might be trying to buy prom dresses for the entire population of Forks, Seattle and Port Angeles combined. And...seeing as it's Alice...she just

"Is there going to be a ball?"

"Prom. It's like a ball but...much less decor. Instead, we just wear ridiculous dresses and dance and gossip--" She breaks off. "Nope, it's exactly like a ball."

"It sounds rather marvelous. Which dresses are for you?"

"I'm thinking something short. Flashy. I am in the mood to shock and awe." Alice grins. "The long ones are for my sister. She likes long dresses. They just make me look short."

A beat.

"Shorter."

"What color are you considering? Have I had a chance to tell you about the ball and what happened with Mister Lefroy?"

My Tom, Jane adds in her head since he is hers now.

"Black, I think. And no you have not." Alice reaches for her hand. "Do tell."

"So much has happened. I will begin with the ball since so much changed that evening."

She squeezes Alice's hand tightly, "When I went to the ball, I was not sure what to expect. My friend the Comtesse talked to me before it about how Mister Lefroy truly does not have any money of his own, which worried me. Then when I arrived, I did not see him. He surprised me in the midst of a dance and we had a strange conversation that did not end terribly well. I chose to rest outside, but Lady Gresham found me and berated me for what she saw as my foolishness. I found myself agreeing with her so I could leave. Then I went outside once more and my whole world changed for I spoke with Mister Lefroy and we are going to find a way, because I have never felt such affection before."

Her words are not as controlled as they normally are, because so much happened that night and Jane at times does not believe it is all true.
