Cubefall isn't doing much for the good captain. Oh, he finds it intriguing, as good explorers should. Alien holidays are very noteworthy. But he has no real interest in being someone or something else (he was a woman once, anyway). And is pretty sure that you really aren't being turned into an animal or robot - he can think of a dozen rational ( Read more... )

99's vidscreen shows up the moment she appears in the bar.

And, well, let's just say she's never had a problem taking on new guises, especially one that seems so familiar.

If one looks close enough, they might see former remnants of her normal face, but the body and clothes are almost drastically different.

Hel-lo, sixties.

Jim looks up for a second. And does a double take. It's like Laura. But it's not. And the clothes...he's seen clothes like that before. When he was in 1960s New York, chasing Gary Seven.

"Laura...is that you?" Another secret mission?

She looks up from studying her rather impressive pair of boots.

"It's me, alright." Her voice is slightly different, too, thanks to the new shape, and she looks up at him with a curious expression.

"I guess it really did work."

He studies her for another moment. "This isn't a...work thing, then? It's for Cubefall?" He has to admit that she is still quite attractive.

"Apparently so. I'm not working right now, so I thought a change could be interesting - if only temporary."

At least she's not a fluffy rabbit. Or a robot.

"I didn't see any options that really appealed to me. And unfortunately, I am working today." He could have been an AI, which was definitely out. Or a horse, which seems silly. Or a Horta, which might have educational but felt wrong. Or someone named Chris Pine, whoever he is.

The narration would've been infinitely amused by Chris Pine, given his starring role alongside a woman who looks identical to 99, but details.

"What are you working on?"

"War games. The fleet is simulating an invasion by two of our enemies. And my ship has been ordered to race from point A to point B in 18 hours when it normally takes seven days." He looks concerned. "I am glad to have some Milliways time to prepare.

"Please, join me." He's unsure if he should give her a hug. It seems a little awkward.

"Well, you seem to have found a new and exciting use for Legos," 99 points out, peering over his shoulder at the map he has spread out on the table.

After another moment or two, she takes an open seat, trying to figure out how to cross her legs in the impossibly short skirt.

"They're usually toys, right?" They still have such things in Jim's day. He never played with blocks, preferring toy spaceships. "They come in handy. Especially the transparent ones." He takes another glimpse at her legs. It would probably be a bad idea to note that he finds them a bit more curvy than usual. Must be the boots.

"Usually, but I've never seen them used for that kind of thing. You know, war games and stuff."

It's almost freeing to know she can come right out and share her knowledge for strategy and tactics without having to play to her cover around him. Then again, she's not sure if she should be excited or cautious about having that certain level of comfort.

"It's on my mind. I hope the ancient Cybertronians don't mind." Though the modern ones would appreciate the need for war games, he thinks. "I saw these..." He holds up the transparent block closest to his hand. ".,.and went back for a map." Yes, they still have printed maps, as a backup.

"Can I get you something to eat or drink?" Of course he has coffee.

"I don't think they have a preference," she teases, her lips turning up in a brief smile. She's pretty sure someone even made a personal fort out of the blocks.

"Maybe coffee. I'm still running on Berlin time."

"I can't say I've ever been there. How was it?" He flags down a waitrat and orders a full pot.

"This time of year? Cool and rainy."

Then again, she hadn't exactly gone for the weather. One hand unconsciously rises to touch her hair - great. She's got the hairstyle, too.

"And the job went well?" He is a little bemused to see her adjust. He knows a little about that.
