[Pre-Milliways: Mary starts to
put her finger on a pattern.]
Mary hesitates in front of the bar. She looks cross - crosser than usual. This is because she's struggling with a moral dilemma.
She's never asked to see anything about her own specific world's future before. She has a vague but strong sense that doing that would be cheating. Besides, she's been coming to Milliways long enough and knows enough awful futures that might be possible - destroyed by killer robots! Destroyed by bombs! - that one hardly seems better than the other; best to go on as if all of them could be avoided.
But Mary has a theory, now, and a theory that is of far more immediate relevance than the vague future possibility of killer robots.
So the question, of course: does she confirm it?
Mary scowls at the bar as if glaring at it for long enough will give her an answer. (Spoiler: it doesn't.)
