I'm sitting at the bar, taking a well-deserved break from the latest case--a kidnapping perpetrated by the victim's dad. It's a hard case, and I need a break.

So here I am, nursing a rum and coke, and doing a few word-search puzzles, to work on keeping my mind fresh. I look bored, though.

Knox is rarely bored, since there is always something going on in Gotham. This week it's an early heat wave, a threat of a sanitation strike, and rumors that a crime gang from Metropolis is muscling in on Two-Face's fairly new mob. Which means that Knox is reading all the daily papers in hopes of deciding what to write about in his column.

He nods hello at the unfamiliar face.

[ooc: for great slowtime fun.]

I offer a nod and a lazy wave, smiling a little. After draining my glass (Coke, for the curious), I saunter over and plop down nearby.

"Hey," I say. "I'm Toby."

"Hey, nice to meet you." He looks her over. Cute, but even if he weren't madly in love, she's not quite his type. Not nearly blonde enough. "Alex Knox, Gotham City, 1993." He extends a hand. "New here?"

"Yeah, is it that obvious? San Francisco, 2010." He's not bad looking, but he's not my type.

"I haven't seen you before. That could just mean I'm not here as much as I used to be, but yeah, there is something about new arrivals. Like any other bar, I guess. Only everyone's not from the same year.

"Haven't been to Frisco in ages. Any big quakes lately?" The '89 World Series quake is relatively fresh for him.

I laugh a bit. "Nah, nothing noteworthy, really."

Of course, having spent how long out of touch with the real world, I may have missed one.

"Good. I like that town. Good convention city. And great seafood." Knox orders a fresh cup of coffee.

"It's certainly home," I agree, smiling. "I'm not familiar with Gotham City--where is it? Is it in the United States?" Alex certainly sounds American enough.

He laughs a bit. "Your world probably doesn't have a Gotham. Most don't, which is their loss. We're on the east coast, about where some place called New York is."

Aha, I knew the accent was familiar.

"Ah. Yes, your accent is even remarkably similar."

"You met Ray Stantz yet? He talks like me more than anyone here." Though there is a bit of nasal tone that is closer to most timeline's New Jersey than to New York.

I shake my head. "I haven't met many people yet at all. I've only been here for a couple of weeks. My time, anyway. Who knows how time flows here."

"I've had a couple of times when it got away from me here, way back when. Before I met my lady. Left for for a day, missed two months."

"That's crazy." It is, too. "How do people keep track? Is there even a way?"

"Luck? It's not like that happens often, though. It's usually two months ago. Sort of. June for me, April for the Bar, and so on. Means I celebrate Christmas in February." Which suits him quite well.

"What's today's date, and is there a calendar I'm missing?"
