From where he's sitting, he's easily able to glance up at the door each time it opens. Two seconds after he sees who it is, his stuff's shoved haphazardly back into his messenger bag, and Sam's on his feet and moving.
"Andrew. Hey." Sam tries for a smile, but it doesn't reach his eyes. "How's it going?"
There's a lot on her plate, what with the gardens and all. Now that it's starting to warm up she's been outside more. So she comes downstairs not seeing Sam at first. If only because she's not actually looking for him.
"Yeeeees?" Coyote says, without looking up from her book. She doesn't seem to know who is looking at her (or care). But she can certainly tell someone is.

He's got some reading to catch up on, and is here to grab a snack and check his messages before he gets started.

He's about to continue with something like not bad, how about you?, until the look on Sam's face registers. His own smile fades slightly.
"...Everything okay?" he asks instead.
Reply
"Guess it could be worse."
Although he doesn't really want to think about how.
"Listen, though -- I need to talk to you about some stuff." A beat. "It's pretty important."

Sam nods a hello, but doesn't get up.

"Hi."
He closes his book and turns it face down. His gaze never leaves her.

After all, there's some pretty important news she needs to hear. Deserves to hear.
"Jess."
He raises a hand and waves, trying to get her attention.

"Sam."
Moving over, she sits down across from him.
"How've you been?"
Reply
"Oh, you know."
Sam turns his book face down, slides it into his bag, and leans forward a little, toward her.
"Listen... there's something I've got to tell you. It's important."

Sam stares at her. Hard.
I wonder if she could do it?

"Hey, Coyote," he says, after a moment.
It comes out a little flat, mostly sounding tired.
Really, really tired.

Diana's voice is quiet but warm as she replaces his cold coffee dregs with a new cup.
"You look like you could use this."
He looks like he could use a lot of things besides the coffee. Like a hug. And a pillow.
And someone to take up some of his burdens for a while.
Diana starts with the coffee. It's less fraught.

"Diana, hey." A hesitation, in which his glance flicks toward the door, and then he smiles, a little.
"Thanks."

She couldn't not.
"I'm not much for caffeine, but it has its uses."
She meets his smile with a slightly broader one of her own.
"Would company be welcome, or should I let you get back to your reading?"

Sam hesitates again, this time glancing down at the book before looking back up at her.
"I, um..."
