Duck's been snoring slightly on a table in the middle of the room, head pillowed on a piece of paper, when -

do you have the resolve, little duck?- she wakes up with a start, shaking her head to get the last wisps of weird half-memory out of her head

"Hey, Duck!" Enzo is holding one of his file windows. "You doing work, too?"

[reallyaduck]

"Yeah . . . ."

Duck looks glumly down at her essay. "I gotta write an essay for class tomorrow . . . um, hi Enzo!"

[a1enzo]

"What's it on?"

[reallyaduck]

"I'm supposed to be writing about Swan Lake . . ."

This would be easier if Duck could remember the whole plot of Swan Lake.

[a1enzo]

"Where's that?"

What? It's a geographical feature, right?

[reallyaduck]

"It's not a where, it's a - I mean, it's not a really real place," Duck explains. "It's from a story!"

(Duck may not be as correct in the not a really real place part as she thinks, but.)

[a1enzo]

"Oh, I see. What kind of story?"

[reallyaduck]

"A ballet . . . it's a really important ballet," Duck adds, sagely, though she couldn't quite tell you why. (Which is a problem for her essay.)

[a1enzo]

Enzo's brow furrows. 'Famous' he could understand, but...

"What makes a ballet important? More important than other ballets, I mean," he adds hastily.

Maybe trying to explain it to someone else will help. It's the Socratic Method!

[reallyaduck]

"Uh . . . well, it's really hard, and . . . people perform it a lot! So that's why it's more important than ballets that people don't perform much," Duck explains, and then ruins her air of authority by adding, ". . . maybe?"

[a1enzo]

"Wouldn't they perform it more because it's important?"

[reallyaduck]

"Yeah! But - wait, didn't I just say that?"

The finer points of language nuance often escape Duck.

[a1enzo]

"No, you said it's important because they perform it a lot."

[reallyaduck]

"Oh, yeah. Um . . . well, they do," says Duck. Helpfully.

[a1enzo]

"Right, but that can't be why it's important."

[reallyaduck]

Duck fidgets. This is harder than she usually thinks about things.

"Well, because it's good, like I said . . . and I guess because, because the part is really hard for ballerinas? So it's really impressive when they can do it!"
