Long Overdue EPs!

Sam Linnfer is out on the lakeside, hands shoved in his pockets. He's not really doing much - just wandering about.

Company, and distraction from the claustrophobia, would be entirely welcome.

New York's just had its first winter storm, and the sidewalks are too icy to run on safely today, so Cal decided to use Milliways for his daily run when it appeared.

Or, well, that was the idea, but he gets distracted easily.

"Hey, Sam."

Sam is, by now, standing on a rock at the water's edge and looking out over the water, but he turns to Cal with a smile.

"Hey, Favourite."

Cal grins back, going over to stand next to him.

"How've you been?"

He can guess the answer to that by now, but it's a traditional conversation starter. He doesn't think about it much before it pops out.

He shrugs. Really, really don't ask.

"How about you?"

Even worse than he might have guessed. Cal drapes an arm around Sam.

"Pretty good. There was a storm last night, I got to take Penny out in the snow for the first time this morning. It kinda freaked her out, but then I ended up having to pick her up to get her back inside." He laughs.

Sam leans into him. Purely because it's cold, you understand.

"Aw. They're probably overdue for snow here by now, too."

Cal's jogging clothes are soft and comfortable to the touch. "That why you've come here to run?"

They won't keep Cal warm for long in this temperature if he's not actually running, but he'll worry about that when it becomes a problem.

He smiles, giving Sam a little squeeze.

"Yeah. Sidewalks are okay to walk on, but not so great for running."

Sam can see to that okay, if needs be. It's one of the many services he offers.

Sam smiles back at him, comfortable, his eyes sparkling as an idea strikes. "How are you with walking on water?"

Cal does not say, Being resurrected doesn't make me Jesus.

Instead, he goes with,

"I don't think I've ever tried."

Sam would only respond with No - you're better-looking, anyway.

He laughs. "Very remiss of you. We could fix that, if you wanted."

"Okay," Cal agrees cheerfully.

Somehow, he thinks he'll have better luck with Sam around than he would by himself.

It's just possible that Cal is correct in this suspicion.

Sam steps down off the rock, standing without apparent difficulty on the surface of the water, and reaches out a hand to Cal.

"Well, don't just stand there. But mind the squid."

In the back of Cal's mind is a voice born of primitive instinct, insisting that such a thing is not possible, despite the evidence. But Cal trusts Sam, and Cal knows better than to listen.

He takes Sam's hand and steps down, careful but unhesitating.

It's not possible. Even the water knows it. But Sam is Little Light and Little Fire, Lucifer son of Magic, changing possibilities like the flick of a card, and the impossible is just one of a range of available options.

The water's surface is not quite solid, but almost, like walking on a thick membrane pulled tight, and makes a gentle slapping sound at the impact of a foot. It's not quite skating and it's not quite walking, but Sam won't let Cal fall.

It could never occur to Cal that he would.

He prods the water experimentally with his foot.

"Feels like a trampoline," he remarks, smiling.

It doesn't, not exactly, but it's the closest comparison in Cal's experience that he can think of.

Sam laughs, leaning up to give Cal a kiss.

"A little," he agrees.
