Or, well, that was the idea, but he gets distracted easily.
"Hey, Sam."

"How've you been?"
He can guess the answer to that by now, but it's a traditional conversation starter. He doesn't think about it much before it pops out.

"How about you?"

"Pretty good. There was a storm last night, I got to take Penny out in the snow for the first time this morning. It kinda freaked her out, but then I ended up having to pick her up to get her back inside." He laughs.

"Aw. They're probably overdue for snow here by now, too."
Cal's jogging clothes are soft and comfortable to the touch. "That why you've come here to run?"

He smiles, giving Sam a little squeeze.
"Yeah. Sidewalks are okay to walk on, but not so great for running."

Sam smiles back at him, comfortable, his eyes sparkling as an idea strikes. "How are you with walking on water?"

Instead, he goes with,
"I don't think I've ever tried."

He laughs. "Very remiss of you. We could fix that, if you wanted."

Somehow, he thinks he'll have better luck with Sam around than he would by himself.

Sam steps down off the rock, standing without apparent difficulty on the surface of the water, and reaches out a hand to Cal.
"Well, don't just stand there. But mind the squid."

He takes Sam's hand and steps down, careful but unhesitating.

The water's surface is not quite solid, but almost, like walking on a thick membrane pulled tight, and makes a gentle slapping sound at the impact of a foot. It's not quite skating and it's not quite walking, but Sam won't let Cal fall.

He prods the water experimentally with his foot.
"Feels like a trampoline," he remarks, smiling.
It doesn't, not exactly, but it's the closest comparison in Cal's experience that he can think of.
