The days in Milliways are long and dull for the new girl who hasn't made any real connections yet. She finds herself with a lot of free time to kill- something that Helena isn't used to at all. So she does what any good vigilante does when faced with endless days of captivity: she trains. A lot. Currently you can find her outside by the lake, doing ( Read more... )

Sports bra and sweat pants is just how those bad Gotham girls roll.

Which means - Renee is wearing the exact same thing as she does the exact same thing - trains. Starting with a jg around the lake which just happens to end up at the training ground.

Huh. Big timers even work out in their masks. That's a thing.

Helena would hardly call herself a big timer. She's not that arrogant.

She stops to stretch and have a drink from her water bottle as the woman approaches. Helena doesn't know her but she's definitely seen her somewhere before. Back in Gotham. The cop.

Helena watches Montoya closely, wondering whether she's here from the No Man's Land too.

Justice League membership makes you B-List at least, in Renee's book.

The wry smirk comes from the recognition she's being watched that closely - just like a Bat.

It fades to a more friendly expression as she nears, and slows, with a nod of greeting.

"Hey. Huntress, right?"

Helena nods in return - greeting and affirmation to Montoya's question all in one.

"Guilty as charged, Officer. Or is it Detective?"

"Not anymore," Renee says with a rueful smirk. "You must be from before me."

"The quake. How long ago did it happen for you?" she asks. Currently, Helena is only measuring time by how long it's been since the quake.

"Five years."

Give or take. With more than that spent at Nanda Parbat. This Renee is older, more confident, more toned. She's not a cop, anymore; she's one of Them.

"Long ones."

Helena lets out her breath in a long slow whistle. Five years is a long time, especially to someone who has been living from day to day for the past few months. Montoya may remember the feeling.

"Gotham... is it still cut off?"

She's not sure she wants to know that answer.

Well, Renee spent a good chunk of it in a jail cell, so she's not going to forget.

Still, they're both in sweats and not sparring and this is wrong to her, so without saying anything, she shifts into a ready position.

"You're from No Man's Land," she says, and shakes her head. "You'll have a happy new year."

Helena visibly relaxes, the weight she's been feeling on her shoulders dissipating somewhat for the first time since the quake hit. It's still nearly a year away but it's something. A goal to work to.

Taking her cue from Montoya, Helena stretches one last time before facing her new opponent in a fighting stance.

"You sure you wanna do this?" she asks. After all, Montoya is just and ex cop. Right?

It's not that Renee intend to show off by exceeding expectations, it's just that she doesn't really want to say out loud 'I got good'.

She smirks.

"Figure I could learn a thing or two. Long as you don't kick my ass too roundly."

And she does need to get even better if she's going to go up against that guy from Liepzig again.

"Well I'm a good teacher. And don't worry, I'll go easy on you."

And then the game is on as Helena moves in on Renee.

Anyone who has seen Helena fight would know that she is true to her word - she put's less power into her fist as she jabs out at Renee and the speed is slower too - although a casual observer would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

One thing you can say about Renee: she has never been a casual observer. She's also now a student of Richard Dragon's - and blocks the fist to the side with hardly any effort at all.

"I didn't mean that easy."

She doesn't slow her game with her counterattack - there's no need, because she expects to be outclassed at anything she can give.

Helena ducks Renee's counter: the girl is better than she expected.

"Not bad, Montoya."

She comes at Renee again, this time not holding back.

"I had a good teacher."

Renee is outmatched, but she can give up a good fight, blocking and countering and having the sense to take a hit and keep coming.

Well Helena didn't think that she learned those moves on the force... if the police where all as good as this, they'd have little use for the Huntress.

Helena could finish this easily if she wanted to, but where would the fun be in that? She lets several opportunities to take Renee down pass in favour of continuing the sparring session.

If it had been Nightwing or even Robin that she was sparring with she would have finished it at the first opportunity, but she doesn't feel she has anything to prove to Renee.
