It could be said that in Milliways, Halloween is redundant. Besides, it's not exactly a holiday that they celebrated on the Twelve Colonies. Between these two facts, Gaius Baltar can probably be forgiven for coming downstairs and not realizing that anything is going on. Particularly considering that Bar isn't speaking to him, and won't change ( Read more... )

Now there's a face she knows.

"Gaius, right?"

Thankfully, it's been long enough that Bar's taken pity on her to change her outfit back, but she's still in white, sort of.

It's a flattering color.

He looks up at the sound of his name and recognizes the face. And, even more impressively, he's sober enough to put a name to it as well.

He nods at her question, and then adds, "Saffron, wasn't it?" while motioning for her to have a seat.

"I was that memorable, before?" she asks, grinning slyly.

She seats herself across from him.

"I have a particularly good memory for faces," he notes. "Especially pretty ones. How have you been?"

"No complaints here," she admits, "other than the horrible wedding dress I was stuck in earlier."

Her feet are still a little sore from those boots.

He arches an eyebrow at that.

"Most brides are quite fond of their dresses, I'm told."

"Well, given my history, Bar has a unique sense of irony."

She looks to his empty hand.

"Not drinking?"

"Not by choice. The bar refuses to serve me any longer. Something about my calling her 'a self-important wooden demon one hatchet swipe away from being a pile of firewood'."

"Mmm."

She bites her lower lip to hide a smirk.

"That would do it."

He gives her almost-smirk a smirk of his own. "Granted, in my defense, she was already trying to cut me off at the time, so I'm not certain how much more effect my outburst actually had on her intentions."

"Maybe not. But I don't think it helped your case, in any instance."

She runs fingertips along the bar's surface, slow and circling.

"It does seem that way," he agrees. "And I'd almost be willing to apologize for it, except that I'm not convinced she'll begin serving me alcohol again even if I did. She's quite the mother hen about that sort of thing, I've noticed."

"She has her favorites," she admits.

"Though I'm sure, like any woman, she can be wooed back eventually."

Gaius shrugs. "I'm not so sure about that. She does seem rather determined to keep it away from me so long as she feels I'm intent on abusing the privilege. Said if I wanted to drink myself into an early grave to go home because she wouldn't help."

"And are you? Intent on abusing it?"

She eyes him quickly.

"It depends on your definition of 'abuse', and that is where Bar and I differ. If you mean am I intent on drinking until I'm in an unconscious stupor deep enough to make the entire frakking universe go away and leave me alone for good, then godsdamn right I am. I simply fail to categorize that desire under 'abuse'."
