Funny thing about those dark corners, they still have a pretty good view of the front door.

She might not see Sam yet, though. It's been a while since she's been in, and you never know who's lurking in the corners.

So they do, which is part of the reason why he chose this one.

Sam spots Coyote, and his jaw sets in a hard line.

Coyote wipes her hands on the red bandana stuck in her pocket and makes her way to the bar. She heads back to a table and pops the cap on her Tecate. Looks like she has an evening of staring out the window planned.

That's the thing about plans. A lot of the time they get screwed up.

"Coyote."

Sam's hand tightens on his glass.

"Long time no see."

Funny, isn't it? Coyote usually thinks so when they aren't her plans.

She raises her eyebrows and turns around.

"Sam. Good evening." Where's Tweedledum?

"Same to you," he returns.

It's been a while since Coyote's likely to have seen quite that level of steady, watchful focus from him.

Sure brings back memories. So she maybe used him as bait for a big bad. Everyone made it out okay, 'cept for the ones who needed to die. What's his problem?

"What is on your mind, Sam Winchester?" Tell auntie Coyote everything.

He shrugs.

"Oh, you know, the usual."

Beat.

"How about you? Anything new? I mean, since last we talked, and all -- it's been a while. Lots of stuff must have happened, right?"

A hard smile.

Well. Someone's pissed in his cornflakes.

"Hardly anything. You know me. I like things quiet."

"Uh-huh. Of course you do," Sam tells her. "Whatever it takes to keep it that way."

"Sam. My keen senses are telling me that you seem a little angry with me." She leans forward, all polite interest. "Do tell me what's wrong."

"Oh, I don't know," he counters, flatly. "Let me think about it -- you think maybe it could be something about how you tried to feed Dean and me and a bunch of other people to that nahuatl guy of yours in Vegas?"

"Nahautl!" Coyote says in what seems to be unfeigned surprise. "Is that what you thought he was?"

"Eventually, yeah -- you gonna tell me he was something different?"

"Yes. He was a shard of an old god possessing the mod boss who was the co-owner of the casino, along with another mafia altogether."

Is the truth more or less believable, Sam?

Silence, for several seconds, in which he just stares at her.

"... you realize that would have been helpful to know, right?"
