Some days you get good news, and some days you don't, and the other day was one of those days for Ellen. She's aware that, timestop or no, she needs to get back to her world and trying to find the northern Vault that Paladin Hoss told her about, but... well, the thought of going back and finding who knows what is currently putting the shivers up ( Read more... )

"What'cha working on?" says the pigtailed eight-year-old approaching Ellen's table. (She's also got new clothing, in the form of a blue baseball cap with the word "Paradoxes" stitched across the front in white.)

"Fixing some guns I got from some space aliens," Ellen says, putting down the tube of epoxy and looking up. "Hi, Sari."

"Oh cool. Real aliens? Were they robot aliens or giant bug things or what?"

"Little green men," Ellen says, indicating something only marginally taller than the top of Sari's ponytails. "In silver spacesuits, although only a few of them wore helmets. They had robots on their ship, but the robots were just drones."

This conversation's probably going to get interesting very quickly, but... well, she'll have to see where it leads.

Sativa's going to be in and out a lot. There's still places to see in town, and you don't make money just sitting around.

...Well, you do in some types of jobs. like shops, or bars, or... well. Anyway the point is she's got to do some legwork from time to time.

"You know, when you said you were selling guns, I pictured..."

No, wait, she's got nothing. This is some far-out hardware.

"If I had regular guns, I'd be fixing up the best one and keeping it for myself," Ellen says, looking up. "The aliens took all of my stuff. I found my favorite rifle ever in pieces."

That's almost as bad as messing around with the number of spleens a person has.

"So, well, I figured, it's not as if the dead aliens needed their weapons any more...."

"No, yeah, I get that. It's just..." She leans in close to look at them. Not too close, mind. They very almost look like regular guns, but something about them says, Bullets? How pedestrian.

"...What do they shoot?"

Ellen digs into one of her pockets- the uniform has a good number of them, as well as some rather nice belt pouches- and extracts a glowing stick about the size of her thumb. "One of these is usually good for something like twelve to twenty shots," she says. "They shoot pulses of energy that either burn the target or make it fall apart in a pile of ash. It's weird."

Even by the standards of a comic-book-laden childhood.
