Mary whirls around.

"If you're mocking me -"

Mary is hardly ever in a mood to tolerate being made fun of - a sense of humor about herself is not her strong suit - but that goes triple or quadruple right now.

"I have promised not to hit people," Mary says - her voice not quite steady - "unless they threaten me. So I shall not hit you, unless you do - but you ought to know that I can."

Mary's face tightens; so do her fists.

"I cannot stop you from laughing. But you will see what I do to the person who has threatened me -" She jerks her elbow back towards the note. "- and perhaps you will not laugh so, then!"

"They want me to be afraid," Mary says, short. Her breath comes in jerks. She won't give them the satisfaction.

Suddenly wary: "Why do you care, in any case?"

As far as Mary is aware, Elle has no vested interest in Mary or anything she does.

"Many people shout. I was not shouting at you."

Though that may have been difficult to determine, admittedly.

"Yes." Mary stretches herself up to her full height - around 5'7 or 5'8, so, not hugely considerable. But. "I have had lessons, and I have been practicing since. I have been in fights, too."

"Not if they've tried to hit me first," Mary says, as if this should be obvious.

(She does, however, tell them that she knows how to hit them. It's important information, she feels!)
