In the bar there is a table strategically set close enough to the fireplace that the two occupants are cast into a warm light without risking spontaneous combustion. When you're a vampire, you use what assets your immortality gives while hiding pesky side effects with excellent lighting. And these two vampires are old enough to have figured out how ( Read more... )

Jane reads the sign and ends up frowning slightly,

"You have not found your way out of perhaps a novel my Mrs. Radcliffe, sir?"

Asher smiles, attempting to seem nice and non-threatening. Damn Anita's morals, crippling them of their best advantage...

"As far as I am aware, we are both certainly real," he replies, rising to his feet.

"Oh."

She bobs a slightly surprised curtsy,

"You must pardon me but I have only ever read of vampires, sirs."

Asher bows, his hands clasped behind his back, manners perfect; some things are never forgotten.

"Many have not, outside of our world," Asher murmurs, pulling out a chair for her, should she wish to sit. "You would not be the first to be surprised so."

Jane sits down with a smile she wishes were a bit stronger,

"Thank you, sir. Is such a sign common practice in your world?"

Asher shakes his head.

"We would have no problem finding willing..." he pauses, "donors. Our bite is pleasureable, and there are many who enjoy the sensation. Particularly shapeshifters." He sits down again himself, golden hair shimmering in the firelight.

"Here, there are only a few of them, from my world. Not enough to feed two vampires regularly." Not when one of them is Jean Claude's pomme, and another two feed Anita's own hunger regularly.

"Shapeshifters, what a complicated world you must live in, sir? How many would be needed to feed two vampires?"

"It depends upon the vampire, and upon the creature feeding them." He murmurs softly, cocking his head to the side.

"I am stronger than Damian, and need fed less often. A more powerful shapeshifter is more satisfying than a weaker one; we need to take less blood to feel full. And any shapeshifter is more satisfying than a human."

"So anyone that you feed from that is brought by your sign would simply be afternoon tea as opposed to the full dinner service that you are accustomed to?"

Asher laughs, softly. The sound is heavy with feeling, and though Asher has been forbidden from rolling any of their potential meals, he lets his gift leak out a little, lending a weight to his laughter, like a gentle trail of fingertips down Jane's spine, soft fur against her skin.

"That is an excellent way of putting it, cher. Though in truth, with so many strange creatures in this place, I do not wish to say such a thing. We may yet find someone who provides a banquet with only one mouthful."

It is a strange feeling and one Jane is not accustomed to so she finds herself blushing,

"That would be quite advantageous for you."

Asher smirks a little at that blush. Of course, were he to know exactly whom he has caused to blush, he'd be a little less smug. And a little more gushing, if he's perfectly honest.

"It would indeed."

"You must think me quite rude to have spoken to you for so long and not have introduced myself. My name is Jane Austen."

Asher blinks at her for a moment, then recovers.

"Only if you will forgive me the same rudeness," he murmurs, smiling. "My name is Asher." He is talking to Jane Austen.

He is starting to think that life as a vampire, bringing people to completion with only a bite, was rather more normal than he had suspected.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Asher. May I ask how long you have been a vampire?"

"Many centuries," Asher answers cagily. "Though less for you, I think. I am from your future."
