Jareth is lounging on one of the couches, sipping a glass of wine.

Ages ago, when he had been a mere Goblin Prince, he had always gotten excellent marks in lounging. His tutor had often praised him for his style and languor. He has only gotten better at it as time has passed. As long as he stays entertained, he stays young and strong; it's only ( Read more... )

There is a woman looking very annoyed at a door. She was looking very much like she wanted to throttle it. She exhaled and stopped looking at it.

"Hello," she said taking up her own lounging stance, "Please tell me you aren't depressingly dull like most of the other people in here."

"I make no guarantees," he says with a faint smile, glancing up and giving her a polite nod. "But I come highly recommended, or so I'm told."

"Well, this may be promising," she said with a smile, "I think introductions are in order. I am Vala Mal Doran, I am not from Earth, and I seem to be STUCK here."

The word, "stuck" was directed at the bar at large. The smile never left her lips though.

"Jareth," he says, "King of the Goblins. From Earth, I suppose, but then we've all got to be from somewhere. A pleasure to meet you--not enough to do, while you're here? Bored already?"

"I've been here for almost a month," she said, "And I don't like staying in one place for too long, except Earth. I like Earth."

"I've never minded staying in one place," he says. "It's not a problem, as long as the place is enough to hold my interest. Of course, some are better than others."

With the exception of this place, and brief diplomatic trips to other kingdoms, he can only leave his own lands when he is summoned, which doesn't happen as often these days as it used to. It's the main reason for his boredom.

"I've never heard of your country before," she said, "I've spent a lot of time on Earth, well, sort of.... And I've been watching a lot of TV, but I've never heard of The Goblin Kingdom before."

She stretched like a cat.

"It's not right out in the open, like England or Luxembourg, but it's there," he says. "You just have to know where to look for it. They don't show it on TV."

Although TV might make things more interesting. He can't help but imagine, briefly, all-goblin television programming.

"Can I see it sometime?" she asked. She suddenly wondered what kind of treasure she'd find there.

"You'd want to?" he asks, surprised. "I suppose, but we don't get many visitors. We're something of an isolated kingdom."

Partly by choice, but visitors do help with the boredom.

Or at least one had.

"You mean to say, that people don't want to see your kingdom?" she asked.

"Most of them don't know it's there," he says, "and then there's the matter of most of the inhabitants. They're well-meaning enough, I suppose, but they are goblins. Not the best company."

"What are goblins?" she asked, "Have you ever heard of the Go'auld?"

"I haven't heard of them, no," he says after a moment. "The name doesn't sound familiar at all. Goblins are... little creatures, mostly, that sneak around and cause trouble. They're not very bright, their sense of humor could be better developed, and at times they're a bit disgusting. But they are my subjects."

"The Goa'uld are parasites that take over human bodies and rule over a population of Jaffa and humans," she smiled and moved nearer to Jarreth, "I don't like them very much."

"...oh," he says, and sips his wine.

"No, we certainly don't have those. Though sometimes humans are turned into goblins--if young human children are given to the goblins, they can change them into their own kind. But they are freely given, and they turn out quite happy."

[mind a slowtime?]
