Demeter loves the idea of Cubefall, change, rebirth and new growth in all its many forms.

One of the choices presented to her catches her attention greatly, it reminds her of something Heph might have made. Also because she loves the idea of it so much, she asked Bar to provide her an image that is currently leaning on the legos ( Read more... )

"Your flower pot is 10.25 inches tall and has a diameter of 13 inches," says a robot from the bar, small enough to sit in Demeter's hands.

"Happy Cubefall, Demeter."

She laughs and walks over to pick up the little robot,

"Happy Cubefall, child."

"It's Mia," she says. "This is the form I chose for Cubefall. I'm a sort of computer person. I'm learning a lot of neat things this way."

"Hello, Mia, you look sweet. Do you know what your form is called?"

"The video screen said, 'Robot'. I guess robots are a sort of computer because I have computer things on me."

She stands to show Demeter her profile and raises a side of her shirt, revealing a USB port.

"I've got these little input spots all over my body so that I can exchange information with other computers and robots."

"Oh you must be learning quite a lot then. Are you finding it difficult to move around when you're that small?"

"Just when it comes to changing levels. I started building some stairs so that I could go up to the bar, but that takes a long time when you're this small. Draco got turned into a robot, too, but he's much bigger, so he put me up here."

"Well do tell me if I can help you move anywhere."

"I don't know," Mia says, glancing around. "There isn't anywhere I need to be. Looks like I don't have anything to do except gather information for the next three days."

This is an exciting prospect for someone like Mia, who enjoys reading encyclopedias.

"I'd appreciate some help in building some stairs to the top of the bar, though. I'm glad you want to help carry me, but I would be quite a pain if that's the only way I can get around."

"Oh of course, where would you like to start it from?"

"I'm not sure."

She looks around, making calculations. Her height, the height from the floor to the bar, the size of the Legos.

"It is difficult to make an efficient staircase," Mia concludes. "It would have to be a tight spiral so that it doesn't take up too much room and the placement of the blocks would still be time consuming as well as difficult to keep supported. Now that I've focused on it and have someone who can manipulate more than just the small blocks, it might be easier to make a simple elevator out of one of the other tinker toy sets."

"I think we can do that, let's find a place that's slightly out of the way."

Demeter picks Mia up and starts moving towards the Bar, picking up one of the tinker toy sets on her way.

"We can probably use the blocks to make a frame and the tinker toys will provide the actual elevator. I'll need a platform to stand on and a pulley or two to lift and lower it."

She pauses and giggles for a moment.

"Oh, I hadn't realized before that 'lift' is the word used in England and 'elevator' the one in America. It seems I have an internal dictionary that's helping me find the words as I need them."

It would, after all, make Spell Check pretty useless.

"Yes, just tell me what to do since I think you're better at building than I am."

"This should be pretty easy since it's a simple elevator. We can do it in sections. You can work on the pulley system, two pulleys working together would be easier, and attaching it to the platform. We'll need a cable strong enough to support, long enough to take me up and down, and easy for me to work. I'll do what I can stacking blocks to put together for the frame."

Mia finds one of those Lego sheets to build on, just the right size for such a platform, and hands it off to Demeter.

Demeter nods and asks Bar for the right sort of cable and then starts putting things together.
