Out of Milliways: An Encounter at Farragut West

The door opens on a scene of mud and tumbled concrete, and shuts very, very quickly behind Ellen's armored form as she darts through. Ellen's already started on cleaning a tobacco-brown gobbet of something as thick and sticky as mucilage off the back of her body armor (she's got a blue and gold jumpsuit to wear instead- don't ask when she changed into it, we'll assume there was a trip to the bathroom involved) when she thinks to look up. "Um," she says at the less-than-pleased-looking young woman. "Sorry."

"I don't know. Some kind of mutant thing, only it was horribly deformed," Ellen says. "I mean, the other mutant was just green and huge and ugly and looked like its skin was too tight, but this thing was like a, a- it had a torso growing out of its torso and it had teeth growing on its chest. And the tongues. I don't even know what it was."

Ellen's a little bit distressed at the moment, or she'd remember that she needs to explain about the whole nuclear holocaust thing.

"Oh, they're still alive too," Ellen says. "And as long as the lower part of my leg. I'm not sure where they survived but they found a place, I guess."

"They die of BB gun shot pretty well, too," Ellen says. "I'd rather deal with them than the giant ants any day."

"We had normal ants in the Vault sometimes," Ellen says a little defensively. "I only met the giant ones once I got out. At least they weren't like the ones in Grayditch. Those breathed fire."

Ellen nods. "It was designed to hold a thousand people for an indefinite amount of time," she says. "There were hundreds of Vaults built in the 2070's. Mine was Vault 101, outside what used to be Arlington, Virginia." After a pause she adds, "My name's Ellen, by the way."

"It's all right. People say things like that a lot around here," Ellen says. "I can't really blame them. The whole surface is weird. I've only been there a month or so now."
