When Capt. Roland received the advertisement with her morning coffee she wasn't sure what "Self Defense" meant, boxing or wrestling perhaps? She certainly didn't expect anything like what the oriental was doing.
The movements do intrigue our Capt. Roland however and thus she watches dressed in her full uniform, her cup of coffee in one hand and the advertisement in the other.
Well, Ryu is dressed in training gi pants, shirtless and shoeless.
His movements are nothing short of impressive, dodging and blocking attacks, responding with demolishing hard strikes, without abandoning speed and grace.
Watching him, Capt. Roland is reminded of a certain publication she recently came across. She quickly pushes the thought away before she blushes and clears her throat.
The narrator would like to apologize for her rudeness, she really does not know better having never seen anyone doing a kata (or anything like it) before.
Jane clears her throat and says, in a very English accent, "Good day sir, I do apologize for interrupting you. Would you happen to know anything about this advertisement?" She holds up the Flyer helpfully.
"I believe so," she says cautiously. "But I would require two things of you. Your assurance that you would not take untoward advantage on my person nor go lightly on me due to my sex. I assure you I am a military officer and lives depend on my skill."
"You will refrain from any too familiar contact. I understand we would be fighting and that calls for close quarters but I will not tolerate being taken advantage of," Jane answers. "Perhaps I make more of this than needs be, no matter. I am Captain Jane Roland of Her Majesties Aerial Corp."
"Ah, so you are an oriental!" Capt. Roland says and the narrator would like to apologize on her behalf, she is a creature of the colonial age and means no offense. "So what shall these lesson involve? Boxing? Wrestling?"
Ryu shakes head. "Not exactly. I teach taijutsu, the art of unarmed combat developed in Japan: it covers wrestling, throws, strikes, pressure points, nerve clusters, evasion, balance, defense and fall avoidance."
Roland arches an eyebrow and says, "Sir, I and my dragon would be in your dept if you can teach me these things. I must be honest with you, while I am a captain, my countrymen have not been forth coming in training me to fight. Any skills I possess are based solely on observation. It is better to teach the dragon how to fight then his captain if one were to believe these fools. No matter that the captain can be the dragon's weakness. I would be strong for my Excidium and it would be my honor if you would allow me to be your student."
Ryu smiles just a bit, nodding. "I think we can arrive to an agreement, then, and it is quite simple: I promise to teach you if you promise me to learn."
"It will not be easy, captain, and I must warn you beforehand. You will be learning how to not be hurt by people who want to hurt you, or worse. More often than not you will be leaving a training session with a bruise or two, and you will need to drill on muscle memory: practice until it becomes second nature."

To tell the truth, Ryu could be a centerfold of that kind of publication anytime. He redefines the world 'physically fit'.

"About the second part, that is simple: I do not 'go lightly', much the opposite. My students are all pushed to excel."

The shonobi steps to the side, next. "Extend your arm forward, please." Why yes, they are starting right now.
