"I take it that Bar is playing an April Fool's trick on you, Charlie?"

"You look good young."

Charlie looks up.

Oh boy.

"I suppose I should say thank you, but I can't say I'm particularly fond of being eighteen again."

"A bad year for you, was it?"

He considers how to answer that. He'd like to pithily answer yes, but this is Croup and Vandemar. Potentially nightmare-worthy information should stay firmly silent.

"Let's say I enjoy being a decade older far, far more than I thought before this morning."

Beat.

"You look unchanged."

"I imagine the Bar thought better of upsetting us. That or we're just lucky."

"I'll go with the latter."

He goes to push fingers through his hair, to brush it away from his face, temporarily forgetting it's much longer. "Oh for god's sake..." he mutters, detangling his fingers and giving a sigh.

"I hated being this age."

"What's so bad?"

"Other than the obvious?" Charlie looks down at himself with a sigh.

"There were a lot of problems with it, not the least of them being simply the age itself."

[mr_v_and_mr_c]

"So it was a bad year, then."

He hesitates on answering.

"Yes, it was."

[mr_v_and_mr_c]

"Somehow I get the feeling that you'd rather not tell us about it." Croup looks and sounds rather amused. "Afraid of what we might do with the knowledge?"

He doesn't hesitate at all that time.

"Yes. And I get the feeling it wouldn't be quite beyond your capacities. I heard you stabbed someone for cheating at cards?"

"It was just his hand. And honestly, can you imagine someone cheating at cards with us? The guy deserved it."

"I liked the blood . . ."

"You like everything. We know."

"This is why I will never play cards with you. I like having no injuries."

Though if he's being completely honest it was rather idiotic to cheat at cards with these two. He's just never going to tell anyone that. "You should see the sign you've inspired; the head of security wasn't terribly pleased."

Though the STABBING=VIOLENCE was entertaining, at least.

"I imagine he wasn't."
