Kirk is not surprised to get a cupcake shaped like a stovepipe hat with his coffee today. it is February 12, after all. And that's one of those days that means a lot to many people, being the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin (literally on the same day in 1809 ( Read more... )

"Jim!" Suzi beams and does a peculiar hopping motion as she moves forward, waving at him above the crowd and disappearing back into it until she gets to his table, "Jim, I'm getting married! In the baseline way, not in the Sime way."

There is nothing that can clear the mixed thoughts from a mind like Suzi. And how much more so than when there is good news.

"Suzi, that's wonderful." He gets up and hugs her.

She hugs him back, beaming and allowing hints of her pleasure to leak out, "We're going to do a civil ceremony, small, but I'm really hoping that you'll come? I'm not sure when it's going to be, but. Eee."

"Come to your wedding? Suzi, wild horses couldn't stop me." Yes, that expression endures, at least among those who ride horses. "Should I find a suit, or can I pass in my uniform?" The last wedding in the past he attended, he stuck with the uniform.

"I don't see why your uniform would be out of place?" Suzi says, "It's San Francisco. People wear weirder things there than they do here."

"Yes, that is true. Though the last time I was in San Francisco in the 20th century, I did require my crew to remove all their insignia, as to not offer any overt clues of the future." He can't say, in retrospect, that such things really matter, though. "But no one seemed to notice our clothing."

Suzi grins, "Either way, Jim, it's having my friend there that matters, not his rank."

"Very true.

"And how are you doing overall? I haven't seen you in months." He sits back down and invites Suzi to join him.

"Quit well, thank you." Suzi says, settling back, "I've used some of the money that Rachel gave the House of Ferris to start my own jewelry shop, and I'm starting to gain a reputation as the best at the truly unique."

"I wasn't aware that Rachel gave you any money. But I can't think of a better person to give it to, or a better cause. Where's your shop?" He found on his visit to 1980s San Fransisco that the city is remarkably similar to the one he knows so well.

"It's on Post street." Suzi says far more promptly than her player figured it out.

"Ah. Near Union Square. Is it a shopping district?" In his day, it's mainly Starfleet housing in preserved buildings and restaurants.

"It is." Suzi agrees, "Lots of jewellery shops around there, and since my stuff is special it means that people keep coming back."

He smiles. "I assume you aren't going to settle for the run of mill 20th century wedding ring?"

"Is that part of the custom?" Suzi asks blankly, "Sime don't do that."

"It's part of the custom in that era, and in mine for many. The couple often exchanges rings as a sign of being bound to each other. It used to be that the man placed on the woman's finger, but it expanded once both women's role and the meaning of marriage did. The custom is for something gold and not necessarily that showy." He could add that some have a custom of placing the woman's ring on her middle finger, but he has always found that one odd.
