[Out by the lake Max makes plansA few minutes later, when he walks back into the bar, Max has a grin on his face that is somewhat incongruous when it one realizes that his glass is empty. Why would he smirk so broadly if he's out of alcohol

"I could ask the same of you," he points out with a sort of amused chuckle. He looks up at her with a grin. "It's been a while, hasn't it?"

"Doing a lot of administration work," Max makes a face. He hates paperwork.

"Trying to spend as much time as I can here." Because it's faaaar more interesting.

"I let them promote me. Which isn't too bad when we're fighting, but when things get quiet again it's all paperwork this, paperwork that."

He shakes his head, "I'm beginning to suspect the extra pay wasn't worth it."

"Any day of the week," Max laughs in easy agreement. "I'm a lot better at staying alive than I am at writing."

"I don't know what a buck is, but I'll take the bet anyway." Max shakes his head. "I've done both, and I know which one I prefer."

Seriously. Paperwork.

"What is this made of?" Max frowns, turning it over in his hands. "All of our money back home is in coinage." Which isn't strictly true, but paper money, at least, is not in use.

"Huh," Max frowns. "Wouldn't it just be easier to use precious metals? Then the coin is worth whatever its weight is worth."

"Maybe it helps when you're an empire. The only ones to go to war with are either us, or the barbarians."
