As comforting as the very small room Ellen acquired upstairs is, she knows full well that she's got to get used to dealing with strangers if she's going to have any luck in finding her father once she leaves. Thus, the young woman in the blue and gold jumpsuit with '101' across the back is settled in at one of the tables, sewing up numerous rents ( Read more... )

Yeah so I suck at this 'hiatus' thing.

Steve notices the sign before he notices the girl, and pauses in front of the table to read it.

It happens, man, it happens.

Ellen looks up and smiles a little. "Afternoon, sir," she says, setting her needle aside for just a moment. "May I help you?"

"You do all types of fabric?"

"Pretty much, although I've never had to work with silk," Ellen says. "Why, what've you got?"

"Leather, several sets of pants. I'm not much of a seamstress."

"Oh, I can do that," says Ellen confidently. "We had to keep our leather objects in repair a lot in the Vault, since there wasn't a source for any new leather. Have you got them here? Can I see them?"

"I'd have to go back through my door to get them. They're... old leather, but I've managed to repair most of them."

"Sir, every piece of leather I've ever worked on has been close to two hundred years old," says Ellen. "I can repair anything short of fire or chemical damage. That, I'll have to patch."

He sits up straighter. "Then you're the perfect for the job, because that's about how old it is."

"Really?" says Ellen. "Goodness. Did you find it in a sealed Vault, by any chance?"

"Owned from new. You've mentioned a Vault a few times: what is that?"

"The underground fallout shelter I and everyone I know have lived in all our lives," Ellen says. "I'm from Vault 101, which was built outside Arlington, Virginia a little before the Great War."

There's a pause.

"Which, um, was in October of 2077. Just for reference."

Obviously different worlds, then. He raises his eyebrows. "Nuclear war?"

Ellen nods. "Between the United States and China, sir."

He would tell her to drop the 'sir', but honestly it's anlmost expected.

"Things don't change all that much between worlds," he muses. "If you're all living in fallout shelters, no one won. Is the government still functional?"

"I.... don't think so, sir," says Ellen. "I've only been on the surface a little less than a day now. Vault 101 was sealed as soon as the bombs headed our way, and it's been sealed ever since. Except for once before I was born, apparently, and my father and me getting out a few days ago."
