Sam's out the back, sitting on a rock so large it's practically a boulder and feeding one of the giant squid.

"Hallo."

Don't look now, but it's a cheerful seven-year-old with a book.

"You look like you could use a hot chocolate, Sam."

This is her way of saying what's wrong and how do I fix it?

O hay, issa Tilda!

Sam leans back, tilting his head to smile at her. "Hey, Shortarse. Long time no see."

Snork.

"Good to see you too."

She beeps his nose.

'cos she can, that's why.

"How've you been? I haven't seen you in a while."

Sam sticks his tongue out at her.

"I'm al right. Sick of being stuck here, that's all. What've you been up to?"

"Learning a new language." Giggle. "And not from you, for once."

Dun-dun-duuuun! He feigns shock and disbelief.

"Makes a change. Who've you been bullying this time, Miss Tilda?"

She giggles again.

"Nobody! My friend Nita gave me some material on a universal language from her world. It's called the Speech. Fun stuff."

"Wish my world had something like that," Sam nods. "Would be useful, and would've saved me a century learning every language I could get my head around."

"I could lend you some of the bits I've already learned, if you like. It's incredibly interesting."

"Sounds like fun," he smiles. "I'm in."

:D!

"I'll gather everything together and leave it for you with Bar or hand it over next time I see you. Whichever."

He grins. "Thanks."

Another piece of bread is tossed to the waiting tentacles.

"Want some?"

Deadpan, or as deadpan as seven-year-olds get: "Squid bread? No thank you."

Sam gives her a look.

"I meant to throw, dwarfy one. Not to eat."

She cracks up.

He tosses some of the bread at her head. The squid will perhaps be upset about this waste of food, but never mind.
