Cooper needs to talk to Ed Hurley.
His car -- his car, not the government's car, but his car, his new car -- is making a funny noise under the hood, and while Cooper isn't a complete mechanical ignoramus (far from it), it's not the kind of funny noise he can easily fix himself. Therefore, it's to Big Ed's Gas Farm he intended to go.
He comes into Milliways with his keys jingling in his hand, intending to set foot out his front door into the wider world.
Confronted instead with a bar -- or an even wider world, from a certain point of view -- he takes out his tape recorder.

"Diane. November 3. Seven-fifteen AM. My morning has started out by getting turned on its ear. Some mornings I would react to this situation by starting my day under a cloud of suspicion and stress, wondering what the rest of the day would bring. Instead, I think I will choose to see this turn of events as auspicious. If nothing else, I can get that morning cup of coffee."
