The door to Milliways opens with a bang today as Brennan stalks in, face set, shoulders squared. It’s nothing compared to the force with which she slams the door behind her.

Booth is alive.

And Brennan has never been so furious in her life.

Booth follows her in, still rubbing his jaw. "Bones! BONES! Wait!"

He's jogging lightly, trying to catch her. "What the hell was that all about?"

And he's more out of breath than he'd like, having just been shot in the chest two weeks before.

Brennan keeps on walking, not slowing her pace.

"You're not dead."

Ironically, she sounds fairly pissed off about that fact.

"Yeah, I know," Booth says, rubbing his jaw. "Sorry, but I kinda thought I might get a hug, or an 'I missed you,' rather than a right hook."

Brennan halts and abruptly makes an about-face.

If Booth can't stop fast enough, too bad for him.

"They told us you were dead."

Yeah. Booth might want to keep his distance for a little while longer.

Booth steps back, hands in front of his face. "Whoa, whoa, whoa," he says, his tone calm, if a little nervous. "They were supposed to tell you I wasn't. Dead."

"I don't know to which 'they' you are referring, but no one told me anything of the kind."

"They told me that you were dead. I remember it. I remember it in very specific detail."

"I'm sure you do," Booth says soothingly. "I remember very specifically telling AD Mitchell that you were to be told that I wasn't."

Pause.

"Sweets was supposed to tell you."

Brennan jabs her forefinger into Booth's chest.

She has just enough self restraint to avoid the area that had taken the bullet.

"Do. Not. Attempt to pacify me, Booth."

"Sweets never said a word to me. And neither did AD Mitchell."

"Why should they have had to? Clearly you recovered. You could have called."

"I couldn't," he protests. "I was in a safe house, without a cell phone, with nothing but a big guy named Maurice to keep me from going anywhere. The most I could do was call out for pizza."

"You're resourceful."

FBI Agent. Former Army Ranger.

"You could have found a way. You should have found a way."

"I. Couldn't." It's said around furiously clenched teeth.

"Why? Not?"

"And if you say 'classified' I will punch you again."

"Work."

Clenched teeth still.

"Besides, why would I call you if I thought you knew?"

dr_temperance November 7 2008, 03:06:27 UTC
"Because."

"We're partners."

That implies--nay, demands--a certain degree of trust.

"You should have called anyway. If I were pretending to be dead, I would have called you."

Safe threat. But still.

Booth gives her a very dubious look.

"If you were pretending to be dead, you'd know that you aren't supposed to be calling people. Even your partner. Especially your partner."

"That is thoroughly illogical. I would want my partner--in this hypothetical instance, you--to be at the highest degree of functionality."

Implying (unconsciously) that Brennan had not been at that degree for the past two weeks.

"And none of this addresses why you were pretending to be dead."
