Still in his paramedic uniform, Ben is entertained with a book, his own music player, a milkshake and fries. He just came in from the world, and is trying to keep his mind busy to not think about certain things.
The young man sure looks like he needs a real distraction, since he is not actually reading, just fiddling with the book and his snack sits very much untouched. Most likely he is not hearing whatever is playing either.
