It's been a damn long day.

"Just a beer, mi vidaAnd he settles in like he's just there to relax. But mostly, he's in to put in his hours for Security because he'd much rather be at home, flopped out on the couch. ( Read more... )

One of Axel's ex-superiors is in the bar. He is currently engaged in the nefarious task of evaluating hammers.

It gets a sideways look from Carlos but nothing more or less. Well, a little more.

He frowns to himself thoughtfully before having another sip of his beer.

The two are weighed, frowned at, and returned. A slightly different set appear. It takes a while before he's satisfied, and then his conversation with the bar turns to questions of nails. Indoor, outdoor, carpet, the whole nine yards.

"Building a fence?"

It's the only thing he can think of.

"House, actually." Xaldin says mildly, "The wood is easier to get at a lumber yard but I can get a better deal on the small things here."

"A house? You ever heard of a contractor, or don't they have those where you are?"

"We're about a hundred years from the first white man to show up on that coast of America in that world." Xaldin says with feigned amusement, "And since I was a construction worker for a large part of my youth I might as well save the effort of trucking them through the dark paths."

"Aha."

Dark Paths?

Put down the Warden hat.

"Sounds like an idea. But, uh, don't mind me, but that outfit looks a lot more like 20th Century than 14th."

"Not from Earth, dude." Xaldin points at ears and eyebrows. It seems to be a lost cause but he keeps giving it a try, "Just hanging out there. This is the uniform and as long as I need the protection I'm going to keep it on."

Carlos just raises an eyebrow. Like he hasn't seen some of the fae with that kind of stuff.

"Got it."

Though he's wondering now.

"What's got you building a house?"

Xaldin doesn't know the fae.

"That's where the tree wanted to settle, dude, and it's got righteous waves, great cliffs, and enough isolation that we're unlikely to go crazy."

"The tree?"

He's lost now.

"It's a really complicated story." Xaldin says with a small shake of his head, "The short version is that we've got an adopted kid who happens to be a tree."

"Aha. Well, uh, guess that makes sense then."

Carlos isn't being funny, either. He usually rolls with things.

"Then you're smarter than I am, dude." Xaldin says, "It's still really weird for all three of us."
