And there's Simon, heading in their direction at a swift stride, stepping around other bar patrons without actually looking at them; his gaze is fixed on Kaylee, until it flicks to Charlie.
She nods to him, once. He pauses, then returns the nod, unsmiling.
A quiet word of goodbye to Kaylee, and she turns and slips back out.
Kaylee doesn't seem to notice; her eyes are fixed on Simon with something approaching wariness.
By the time he's close enough to hear, she's worked her hands out of her pockets. A good deal of the anger's gone, too, leaving her holding herself with a little more care, and with the lines in her face pronounced.
Quiet: "I'm all right." Beat. "I'm sorry."
(She might be lying through her teeth about the former; the latter is -- fortunately or unfortunately -- sincere.)
"It wasn't in the original plan," she tells him. To hell with hands; her arm slips stiffly around his waist.
For a moment -- no more than a few seconds, if that -- she allows herself to relax, eyes closing, head nodding forward.
But just a moment; she pulls herself together, and glances toward the staircase, and keeps her gaze there. "This is gonna be easier upstairs." And that's a lot sharper than before.
