Bartleby came in earlier, and has been in his room. Anybody who looks in said room now will see it completely bare. He's carrying a small bag and Cow, who has been hungry while he was away and is not therefore attacking him just yet. He stops by the noticeboard, and pins up sheet of paper.
It says: BERNARD -- don't be fooled by the empty room, will still be in to bartend, although not regularly, for a while. If the Fool turns up, which I don't expect he will, tell him I didn't forget my promise - I haven't left.
Can I talk to you, ASAP, about being paid in American dollars instead of room, board and bar credit? I'm sleeping in a doorway at the moment. It would help.
Bartleby
After regarding the notice for a minute, he sighs, picks up his bag again, and heads out of the door, into the greyness of a Wisconsin winter night.
