The Doctor turns toward the voice. "It's just that I hadn't expected to ever come back here again," he explains. Then he sees the horse. "Hello there, beautiful. Your name's not Arthur, is it?"
All horses are named Arthur, as far as the Doctor's concerned.
"I don't know what an FCC unit is exactly, but you're saying he's a construct of some sort?" he asks after getting over his initial startlement of the horse speaking.
"Faithful Cybernetic Companion," he explains as he orders himself a beer and a hamburger. He's been here for the last few days, ever since he nipped back to get Fess. He's putting off his mission a little since he hadn't gotten a rest before being assigned.
"They're an old unit from a few centuries before my time and he's been with my family for ages."
The Doctor breaks off. He was about to say 'not my universe, then' when he suddenly realized that his universe isn't his anymore. Everything he knows, all the trivia about planets and stars and peoples... it all applies to some other universe now. Not the one he's living in.
For all he knows, a universe where zeppelins litter the skies of London by 2008 could very well be manufacturing robotic horses in the asteroids by 3000.
It's a kick in the gut to realize that everything you know is very likely wrong.
"Just a bit of an unexpected realization. I'm trapped in a universe parallel to the one I'm used to, and I'm still coming to terms with everything that means."
Was there another Doctor in this parallel world? Were there Time Lords at all? Could... could there still be a Gallifrey here? So many questions spinning through his head. He shakes them clear. Another time.
"Not to worry. Focus on it later. So, you're from Y3K and a bit, and Fess is from a few hundred years earlier, yeah?"

"His name's Fess," he explains with a brief smile. "An old FCC unit, if you would be of a time to know what I'm talking about."

"Don't bore him with details, Fess," he says with a shake of his head before taking a sip of his beer.
"Duly noted, Rod."
Rod smiles at the Doctor.
"Maxima does make the best robotics in the known universe, though."

"Three thousand and some change," he says with a brief smile.

"Probably not my universe, then," he amends.

"Hey. Buddy. You look like someone just kicked your cat... into your dog. You all right?"
