Chuck pushes the door open to call for Casey and stops. He was pretty sure he was walking into the projection room of the Buy More and the last time he checked, there hadn't been a bar there. Chuck looks behind him and then back in front at the bar where he had expected to see a couch and projector screen ( Read more... )

Sarah Jane turns her head at the sound of her name. Oh, sure it's common enough, but she's frequented Milliways often enough to know that the only other Sarah that comes here on a regular basis happens to be a house.

She tilts her head curiously at the man by the door as she adjusts the baby in her arms. "Do I know you?"

"Oh, no. Not really, at least I don't think so," Chuck babbles a bit before sticking out his hand. "I was looking for a different Sarah actually."

"Chuck Bartowski," he says automatically.

"So, whats happened to the Buy More?"

It takes some shuffling, but by now, Sarah Jane has become an expert at holding Valerie in one arm by now. The baby squeals as she's moved, but generally remains quiet.

"Sarah Jane Smith-Bond," she answers and nods towards her daughter. "And this is Valerie. As for the Buy More... I've never heard of that, but it's safe to say it's right out that door behind you."

She smiles softly. "You're in Milliways now - a pub, among other things, at the end of time and space."

Chuck blinks. "A pub? At the end of time and space? That I got to through the Buy More?"

He pauses and looks around a bit more, smiling down at Valerie. "You sure I'm not just hallucinating?"

"Absolutely positive," she answers with a laugh. "Welcome to Milliways, Chuck."

"Well, thanks. I think," he continues looking around at the bar and at the other patrons.

"It sure beats fixing another broken cell phone."

"Is that what you do then? For a living?"

"Yes, well, sort of. It's complicated," Chuck shifts on his feet and runs a hand through his hair. "I fix computers and PDA's and other stuff as well. I'm a pretty good hand at them all."

And hear Sarah Jane had thought she was catching up with the technology of the 21st century.

Her cheeks flush pink a little and she glances down at Valerie as a distraction. "This may sound a tad barmey to you, but what exactly is a PDA? A sort of computer? Or mobile?"

He laughs, "Its a bit like a mobile phone and a bit like a hand-held computer. Doesn't have the full keyboard but it does all the fuctions: word, internet, email and some even have solitaire."

To Sarah, it sounds a lot like James' mobile.

Dryly, "Sounds lovely. You'll have to excuse me, but technology and I haven't quite been the best of friends since I moved to the 21st century. It's quite possibly the only part I've found entirely overwhelming."

Chuck takes this all in stride and is quite proud of the way he doesn't seem to be freaking out at all.

"Where did you come from then? If you don't mind my asking."

For a first timer, he's certainly doing a good job. Which could explain Sarah's lack of explanation about this place. Or, really, that could just be because Sarah Jane's never quite been good at this whole 'meet and greet the newbies' sort of thing.

"An alternate version of Earth than the one I live in now, 1980. Chuckle. "I met my husband here, you see."

"Right of course. Stands to reason that if at the center of the universe there is a bar, there must also be alternative universes as well."

He takes another deep breath and tries to forget all those supposed scientific facts he picked up from watching too many astronomy shows. "I can see how the technology can be a bit difficult to pick up. Truth be told, there are a lot off people from where I'm from that don't really understand it all either."

"You'll catch on," Sarah Jane assures. "You're certainly handling this far better than a lot of other people I know. It's quite impressive."

She nods at the rest of it. "Thankfully, being a journalist means that I only have to keep up with the basics. Anything more difficult than that, I'll let James handle."

"I'll be honest, I'm saving my freak out for the morning after. Just going in stride at the moment."

He flashes her a big grin.
