Electricity is the future.
And what is lightning, when you get down to it, but wireless electricity that has not yet been controlled?
Summoning it, that's easy. Controlling it... that just takes more experimentation.
This particular experiment had not yielded the results he had hoped for.
Still, with enough power, why shouldn't anything be possible?
Even the opening of a door...
A flicker of bright but harmless lightning precedes him through the door: one (slightly singed) late-Victorian scientist, in a spotless suit rather than a lab coat. He stops just through the door, looking around in wonder.
It could be the Martians.
Or something else.
