Lo and behold, there is a fresh beer.

"Hey, Mel."

"Hey, Jonny."

Without even a 'thanks', Mel's drinking that beer instead.

"How'd it all work out?"

He's okay with no thanks. The greeting's all good.

"We got the Scythe. But Kennedy's dead."

"Which one?" Mel says before her brain catches up with her mouth.

"Oh. One of the Slayers?"

"Yep", he confirms, lifting his own drink. "One of the first that showed up after the big Calling."

Mel doesn't recognise the name, offhand. Later she'll look it up, and discover that Kennedy did die around this time, but don't worry, she gets better. Right now, though, she shakes her head in sympathy.

"Sorry."

It's matter-of-fact, for all the genuine sympathy. Sometimes Slayers die.

He nods, hearing both notes in her voice - and it's true, Slayers die, but that doesn't make it much easier for the Watchers.

"One casualty's probably pretty good going, for what we were up against."

"Think it's rutting impressive," Mel agrees.

And adds, "what about them?"

"Didn't see much of the battle", he admits. "But given we had River, Spike and Spoon... I think they probably lost quite a few."

This isn't good news to Mel, but her face remains impassive. She only really managed to save two.

"But we got the grab, right? The boys made it out?"

He didn't say it cheerfully. He hadn't wanted any of the Slayers dead.

"Yeah, the Winchesters are fine. Stopped the ritual, got the Scythe, the whole bit. Emma was alive when we left."

"Well, getting the scythe's the important bit."

Mel'd offer to go back and snap Emma's neck if she thought it would help.

It wouldn't. Jonathan knows how Wolfram and Hart work - it wouldn't get rid of her.

"Yeah. So they can't try it again." He pauses. "Mel, I need to ask you something."

Mel raises an eyebrow, but shrugs.

"Hit me."

"Do you know if there were any Slayers between my time and yours? Any at all?"

The answer is both affirmative (yes, she knows) and negative (no, there weren't). Mel shakes her head.

"Remember when you sent me to Hell?"
