Jamie has:

a.) sensible clothing (no more hideous orange robes for him, thank you very much
b.) one of the prime seats by the fireplace
c.) something that looks like bright yellow ice-cream on a stick, currently melting and dribbling a little onto both a.) and b.)

He looks like he's enjoying himself.

X does not look like she is enjoying herself.

She does, however, look more like a normal person than usual.

Blame Lilly.

You could also blame the jeans, the tank top and button-down shirt, and the bubble-gum chewing.

Her head comes up when she smells Jamie, gaze searching the bar.

Yep--that would be when any appearance of normality flies out the window.

Oops?

Jamie hastily licks the side of the ice cream that seems most in danger of melting, tries to angle it to the side to avoid getting any more on his shirt, and then looks up and sees X.

There's a blink of slight surprise - he'd always figured X's usual clothing was just one of the customs of her world - before he grins and waves.

X does not wave back.

She does, however, approach him quickly but silently.

"Jamie."

Beat.

"I have been looking for you."

"Hullo to you, too," Jamie says, unperturbed. "I bet SARAH talked to you, right?"

It must be said that with his messy t-shirt and melting ice cream, Jamie could not look less ready to go on a covert ops mission.

"Yes."

Beat.

"I do not want them to come here."

There is a longer pause.

"And I do not want them to make more of me."

"Honestly, I think odds are better they won't believe a word of it," Jamie says, with a confidence he really does feel.

"People don't. But either way it won't be much good for SARAH - whether they think she's gone mad or malfunctioned or what - so it's a good thing we're going to get it back so she won't need to worry."

This confidence he only half-feels, which means he projects it twice as hard.

"They are scientists."

Or they might be.

"It is better if they do not get any ideas."

"So they won't. Trust me," Jamie adds, reassuringly. "I've got experience stealing things."

X looks him over, considering.

"You are too confident."

Jamie shrugs, with another sideways grin.

"You get too many nerves, you start jumping at all the little things, and get caught a whole lot quicker. Confidence helps. Besides, people notice you more if you're nervous."

"I know."

She really does.

"You will go?"

"I don't mind lending a hand." In a casual, it's-nothing sort of voice.

Jamie takes another bite of his ice cream. "And you're coming with?"

"Yes."

Beat.

"It is what I am made for."

That, and a host of other things, actually.

"We'll look out for each other, then," Jamie says, which probably mostly means 'X will look out for Jamie.' But Jamie will do his best to help her blend in if she has trouble, and this seems a slightly fairer trade.

He hesitates a moment, and then says his voice a little more sober, "Ah - do me a favor, all right, though, when we go?"

She looks back at him.

"I will not kill anyone."

Beat.

"If I do not have to."

"- not what I was going to ask, but good to know," Jamie says, after a beat.

"Ah - actually what I was going to ask had more to do with me killing people. Or, not me, but - there's this thing, all right, and I can't remember if I told you about it - it's Rule Two of Homeward Bounding"
