Enzo's interested in working some more on that User music Tommy gave him, and those songs would just raise too many questions in his world. Thus, he has once again smuggled the guitar through the student lounge bathroom, into the utility tunnels, and thence to Milliways ( Read more... )

Roundabout with Roundabout, eh? Well, someone might have something to say about that...if he only knew what it was first. This started out with a small greenish-red null wandering about, who was perchance to hear this tune.

What is it?

Music, yes (Well, he hopes...), but what kind? The null - Welman Matrix - slid forward and soon saw Enzo standing there. At least...it LOOKED like Enzo. One had to be sure, though... After all, that suit was REALLY throwing him, what with limited vision and all.

"Enzo? What are you playing? I'm afraid I'm not familiar..."

Naturally not. Who in Mainframe would?

"Dad!!" Enzo puts the guitar aside and drops to kneel on the floor by the null. "Dot said you were coming here now! It's called Roundabout, it's User music, Tommy gave me a bunch of it."

Okay, he didn't know Tommy, but a reasonable assumption would be that he was a very decent person.

"Ah, I see. Don't believe I've ever heard the like. Been practicing, have you?"

A fairly-neutral comment, since he actually had no idea whether this was the way it was suppose to sound or not.

"Every evening!" he declares, trying to make it sound like a good thing.

It's a nicely distracting alternative when there's no one to hang out with.

"And this is for...?"

Well, when you practice, one (or null) assumes that there is a reason behind it, even if it's just for casual enjoyment.

"Just for fun. It'd be more fun if my fingers could reach, though. I think I'll need a compression command for a while."

"I see."

He seems to peer a bit closer.

"Was the suit your design?"

Enzo giggles. "Uh-uh. Bar dresses people up sometimes for a few User holidays. This one's called Mardi Gras. I'm not sure what the holiday's for, but there's lotsa beads and feathers and sparkly things." And often young ladies wearing nothing but the aforementioned.

"I'll look into the matter later. Sound's interesting..."

Ah, the wistful thoughts of curious professor...

"So, you weren't thinking of maybe performing for this holiday?"

If he's practicing that much it might be worth the effort to try.

Enzo smiles, a 'thanks for humouring me, Dad' sort of smile. "I can only really play I Wanna Be Deleted and House of the Booting Disk. I guess I could do those, though..."

What are dads for? He nods encouragingly in his nullish way, then says...

"Of course, you want to be sure they don't see you bringing any of this back from Milliways. I mean, unless some of your friends know already..."

And...he was making a play to get on the subject of 'How's school?'.

Nice try, but he doesn't have to address his social situation to answer that one.

"Uh-uh. They'd think I was random. But I keep the music here 'cause they'd ask about it at school, and the costumes go away when you leave." He grins. "The guitar's the problem, 'cause the best way to get here's through the lounge bathroom!"

This prompts a short laugh from the null, who was clearly getting a mental image. Just a harmless mirthful laughter, because he was sure to have gotten into hijinx himself at some point.

"By the way, speaking of the academy..."

You don't get off THAT easily, young man.

"...I understand there are a few bugs in the social system, so to speak."

It was not a question, and the statement was put across in the concerned-dad form. He waited to see if Enzo would bridge the gap and volunteer some elaboration.

Enzo sighs and hugs his knees. "Yeah. I borked something real bad, in front of like half the school, and they told the other half. Everyone was staring at me, and whispering, for seconds. Now they're just not talking to me much."

"Any chance to make amends?"

'Cause after all, the Guardian protocol SAYS 'Mend and defend'. It doesn't say how exactly that's applied.

"I did! I mean, I fixed the thing I screwed up in the first place. But that didn't fix stuff with the rest of the school." He perks up a little. "AndrAIa said she had an idea, but I dunno what it is yet."
