So, today is The Day.
What day might that be, you might ask?
Why, it is the day that James does his periodic check to see whether the front door will open and let him back into his world. After talking to his uncle Ron (who had told him just that - to check the door from time to time), he is actually surprised to find that not long after that word of

"Um, James?" she asks. "What're you doing sitting in the middle of the floor?"
Reply
James glances up, immediately recognizing that voice.
"Lily!" He blinks. "What are you - I thought you went home!"
Reply
She shakes her head. "I guess we've been so busy around here, we haven't seen each other a lot." Or so says the mun's half-assed attempt at handwaving Lily's absence.
"So, why are you sitting in the middle of the floor? Teddy stick you there or something?"
Reply
"My door's opened, Lil. It's actually opened."
That might not particularly explain why he's sitting in the middle of the floor, though.
In fact, it really doesn't.
Reply
"Really?" Her face lights up. "James, that's great!"
Well, if James' door is open that that must mean hers is open, too. So she marches over to where her door is (which is probably in the same spot James' is, it just looks different) and pulls on the handle.
It doesn't budge. Lily's face falls.

He watches as she tries to pull the handle and waits.
"...It...isn't opening for you, then?"
That's just not right.
Reply
"Maybe..." she says, biting her lip "maybe it's not time for me to go home yet."
Reply
"I'm supposed to take care of -" He stops himself short on account of nearly embarrassing himself with one of those sappy big-brother moments. "Can't you just...come through my door? Or - I guess it'd mess up the time."
Reply
Lily takes a deep breath, tries to put on a brave face.
"I'll be okay, James. I'm sure I'll get to go home soon. And until then, you can probably come back and check on me."
Reply
Slowly, he nods. "If you see Teddy before I come back, make sure to stick around him as much as you can, okay?"
He pauses.
"I saw uncle Ron a little while ago, by the way. I mean our uncle Ron."
Reply
Her eyes widen in surprise. "Really? Is- is he still here, do you think?"
Reply
He hates to think that someone odd (in a bad way) might try to talk to her; at least with Teddy around, there's someone to look out for her when he can't. (But he wouldn't admit to any of that aloud.)
"No," James says with a little sigh. "I don't think so. When I talked to him, he said that coming here felt like it was going to be his last time. He said we could talk to him and mum and dad and aunt Hermione about the Bar when we go home, though."

Reply
"Well, yeah - I guess." He smiles a bit. "I think you're going to be just fine here."
Not to say he won't come back as soon as he can, anyway.
Reply
She knows he'll come back.
Reply
"Where've you been sleeping all this time?" he asks, curiously. "Because if you need somewhere to sleep, you could always use Dad's room. It's where Teddy and I have been all this time - just ask the Bar for a key."
