The space by the fireplace is shared by three that vaguely know each other but do not, at the moment, talk:

- One, a mortal man, dead now, drinking tea and watching the flames in the fireplace with no apparent boredom.
- Two, a rather purple deity drinking coffee and absorbed in a fat novel about ghosts.
- Three, a Tarot card drinking scotch, and leafing through a stack of cards, dark red and gold and very beautiful, sometimes chuckling to himself as if somebody had made a rather off-beat joke.
