The hill country in parts of Dardania is wild, and rough; there are beasts living there that one might well think had survived somehow from the age of Titans, and of the first Earth Men, who made their swords of stone. They make good hunting for a prince and his companions, as one can make a name for himself that way, and no harm done to the ( Read more... )

This man knows an ugly wound when he sees it. He's had his share of them.

"That looks bad. Let me help you."

The young man- and he's a man proper, and not the youth he'd been when last he entered the Bar- looks up, his fingers having already come away from the site well and truly bloody. "It needs washing out, or it'll fester," he says. "Beyond that I'm not sure how bad it is."

"Sit down," he says. "I'm no healer but I've had to patch myself up a few times."

He pulls out his wand.

"Let's start with cleaning up the blood. Then we'll see how bad it is."

His eyes go to the wand, and then up to the man's face again. "What do you plan to do with that?" he asks; there is no fear in his tone, only a little wariness.

"Magic," he says simply. "I do magic with it. Can I see that leg?"

That gets a very peculiar look. "Odd," says Hektor, "you don't look like a eunuch. Or one of Asklepios' priests- but you may look, if you can get it clean."

Unexpected laughter from the mun RE eunuch status.

Sorry, but it is funny.

"I'll ignore the comments about me being neutered. For now."

He points the wand at the leg.

"Scourgefy."

"Magic is not a thing for men in my country," says Hektor, "but sometimes the priests of Cybele do it, and they all offer her their manhood."

Then he winces a little, because even a magical act of cleansing is going to take away some of the dried and clotted bits that cling most tightly to the area.

That'll cause a lot of spluttering!

"I assure you I didn't trade any body parts for what I was born with."

Pause. Yeah, that looks pretty clean.

"Let's see how deep it is."

Hektor grimaces, if only a little, and turns to examine the injury himself. It was bad work, the last thrust of a desperate animal, and it shows. By the look of things it'll be no little time before it's healed. "That," he murmurs, "will leave a scar worth telling stories about."

"Can't close it, but I'll see if I can't at least shrink it down."

Pause.

"That is going to cause some discomfort though."

He might be understating. Like, almost a lot.

"I've borne plenty in my time," says Hektor, but he nods and reaches for the edges of the chair on which he sits.

"Probably only manage to make it somewhat smaller," he explains as he points his wand at it. "But it'll be better than leaving it as-is. And you'll certainly have an interesting scar to talk about."

Then he mutters something Latin-y.

He doesn't swear, although he'd like to. The earth magic he's accustomed to isn't anything like that- it's poultices, potions, auguries, not forcing the body into something wholly unnatural. The stranger's spell is effective enough, as the edges of the wound begin to draw closer; it also leaves a fine sheen of sweat all over him, from the effort of resisting the urge to let out a yell.

He certainly didn't claim it was going to be enjoyable...

"I know," he says, once he's done what he's able to do. It doesn't look like it's closed off much, but it might not be as deep as before. He really can't tell where the improvement was made. He'll have to content himself with knowing he did something to help. "I've had to do it to myself now and then. Hurts like bloody hell."

"That, I think, describes it nicely," says Hektor. "I think it will need a poultice now, or at least some bandages, else it'll open again- ah, there, the rats have brought it... You have my thanks, stranger."
