Nathan was at the bar again with a scotch in hand. Not much else to do really. He thought he might have woke up briefly. But only to be told by his mother that Peter was missing, while he finally got a good look in the mirror at what the explosion had left him as. He didn't remember passing out, but he was back here again so it must be so. Nothing ( Read more... )

"Guten abend, my friend. I hope you don't mind my saying so, but you look as though you could use some company."

Well it seems like the fuzzy blue guy has decided that you're someone to keep on, Nathan.

Nathan just shrugged, and drank some more of his drink. Well, Kurt's not the weirdest patron he's sort of friended. He used to speak to Hellboy on occasion too.

Kurt gets himself a beer and turns and regards Nathan.

Hmm.

"So what is orange and sounds like a carrot?"

"Nothing, because carrots can't make a sound," Nathan retorted at that.

"Heheh, you win, because I got the joke backwards anyway," Kurt answers with an embarrassed grin. "It's orange and sounds like a parrot, and the answer is carrot. And if you ever see a kid named Bobby who can create ice? I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention this one. I'm pretty sure they take away your hero license if you fail at witty repartee!"

Brief blink.

"Bobby... Drake, right? Pretty sure I met him in here once. Months back."

"Ja, that would be him. Months back? Well...I realize now that there are many timelines that can meet here."

Leave it, Kurt. If Bobby shows up, you can ask him. For now, just chill.

"In any case, I realize that perhaps our world are very different, but I know how difficult it can be for a mutant. If you need to talk, consider me a neutral party. If not, well...I'm fairly good at poker as well."

Nathan nodded, and quietly asked, "Any mutants in your world try to run for a public office? After I realized I could fly, I tried to hide it for weeks... Months really. Nothing good could be done with it for the most part, and saw it more as a liability when I was running for Congress."

He sighed, "Not that it matters now. I'm an elected Congressman, and I can't even wake up, and stand up right now as I am."

"Ah. A few, I am sure, but while I am honored to know mutants who have spoken to Congress, the UN and the like, no mutant has been elected to office that I know of. There was one who set up a dictatorship on an island, which did not go well, and there is one who is now the queen of Wakanda, an African nation. She is the only one to have had true success. I was nearly m-" Kurt stops and drops that sentence completely. Somebody doesn't want to talk about something.

"In any case, I do not doubt that it would have happened soon in America, actually. The mutant population was growing high enough. Before the curse fell and most of us lost our powers. Now we are a bit too busy trying not to go extinct to worry about politics."

Nathan wasn't going to pry, knowing that everybody's got their secrets.

He replied, "Well, felt I never would have been elected if they knew. Still don't know how they're going to react to us when the truth does get out."

He then frowned, "Wait, a curse? How can people just lose their powers? Did they fade over time with use?" Wondering what such a thing might mean for his world.

"I suppose it will depend on your popularity, and on the manner in which you reveal yourself. Has there been any media coverage of mutants?" Kurt wants to be hopeful, but realistically the public has never reacted particularly well to this sort of thing.

He raises a hand to calm Nathan. "Nein, nein, nothing like that. Powers do not fade with use, for most mutants in my world. Quite the opposite! A few years ago, the mutant population was in the millions - more and more of us were appearing all the time. Then, all of a sudden almost everyone lost their powers. Just poof, gone, no scientific explanation, and believe me with the minds working on it if there was one, they would find it. It's not a disease or anything like that. A curse is the only word I can think of to explain it."

"None yet. Nobody's been willing to admit it that publicly." He will... in some months though.

Nathan shook his head, "That doesn't make any sense. Has to be some reason, they can't just disappear into thin air."
