There's a Jack Harkness at the bar, having a scotch

"That looks good."

Merlin eyes the stranger's drink, having just arrived at the bar, and turns to order one of his own from a passing waitrat.

"It is. It's bracing." He holds up the glass, admiring the color.

[markedcard]

"Quite." He holds up his own glass after a minute. "Amber, I think, is one of the most beautiful hues in the world."

[firstcptjack]

"Are you an artist?" Jack asks--he's not sure what other type of person would notice.

[markedcard]

"Amongst other things, yes, I am." He tosses back half the glass and extends a hand. "Name's Merlin. You a pilot, or just dress up as one?"

[firstcptjack]

Jack straightens up a little and says, "Captain Jack Harkness of the 133rd," as he shakes Merlin's hand. "I was a pilot before I died."

Best to get things like that out in the open first off, he feels.

[markedcard]

"Pleasure to meet you, Captain Harkness." He's met dead people before, or at least one, so the deceased status isn't going to phase him. Besides, the pilot looks great in uniform.

[firstcptjack]

"Nice to meet you as well--Merlin."

Most people take it graciously. He's grateful for that. Being dead is strange enough without being flailed at over it.

[markedcard]

He grins. "Before you even think to ask it, no I'm not that Merlin. The bearded mentor of King Arthur. So on and so forth. We just share the same name."

And maybe a handful of abiliies.

[firstcptjack]

Jack starts, and then smiles at him. "I hadn't thought so. Usually you picture Merlin with a beard and speaking with a lot of 'thees' and 'thous'."

[markedcard]

"My mother occasionally speaks like that, actually. Don't knock it till you've tried it." He downs the remainder of his scotch.

[firstcptjack]

"I've only heard it on plays or in church.

"Is your mother a Quaker?"

[markedcard]

"She's the oldfashioned type." He grins, ruefully. Best to leave the church comment alone.

[firstcptjack]

"I see," Jack says with a nod. "I imagine she doens't like you being an artist much, with that bohemian lifestyle and all."

[markedcard]

"It's not so much me being an artist, she's more or less okay with that. More than I absolutely refuse to bend to her vision of my future."

[firstcptjack]

"That happens to a lot of us," Jack says quietly. "My mother didn't want me to volunteer. She was sure I'd die in a foreign country . . ."

Which he did. Oops.
