Often, Kick seems to appear out of nowhere.

Like now, for example.

"Hi!" she says, already propped on a stool next to him, with Nero sniffing at the hanging scarf.

"Hello." he smiled. A little one, but a smile nonetheless.

He eyed the dog sniffing his worn scarf.

"What's the matter?" she asks, ignoring Nero as he begins pawing at the scarf.

Look! It wiggles when he fwaps it!

"Mind's on a lot of things." he answered.

He laughed when the dog started playing with the old muffler.

"It seems your dog has taken a liking to my scarf."

"He does that," she says, giggling at the pup.

"An' he's not a dog. He's a wolf."

"Hello, Kick." he greeted amiably. The face of a happy child was one to get anyone's spirits up, even for the most depressed of men. "I'm Watson. Or John, if you'd like."

"How about Mr. John?"

"Actually, John is my first name. Most people simply call me 'Watson'."

Considering John was a bland, common and typical type of name that could apply to a variety of people, Watson was usually what distinguished him in a crowd and he was quite used to it.

Kick considers this for a moment.

"Mr. Watson, then? I like the sound of that. Makes y'sound... important."

He grinned. "'Doctor', actually, but thank you very much. I don't think anyone's ever said my name sounded particularly important to anything."

"Well, if you're a doctor, you must be!"

She grins.

"What kind of doctor are you?"

"A general practitioner. A family doctor, in other words."

She wrinkles her nose.

"Oh."

Beat.

"I don't like doctors, when they're doing their job."
