"You got a new friend," Kaylee says, taking a seat on the bar. The box goes on the bar; the bag goes under it. "He's in the box. Monkey says if you blow on him he'll get bigger, but careful where you do it or he'll get hurt."

Mal hasn't touched the box or the bag.

"Monkey gave you something for me."

This is a look of great alarm.

"Two things." Pause. "He's a Buddha now, so -- I guess he gives people stuff."

A Buddha.

Mal, his hand nearly wobbly with disbelief as he opens the box and the bag, just stares.

A pony. And a plastic rocket.

"Oh," he starts dryly. "All my prayers..."

"He did mention somethin' about that, yeah."

Mal's getting a very curious look.

Which Mal notices, and debates not elaborating or explaining for.

"...When we went to go get Inara from the training house, I had a detour by the altar."

And now Mal's just getting stared at.

"...if I was sneakin' up on Inara, why would I talk to Buddha?"

"I'm... failin' to see what that's got to do with you talkin' to a statue instead of just bein' quiet."
