As River has pointed out in the past, "day" is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles; irrelevant on board ship, and doubtless even less so here at the end of the universe.

Simon's not really thinking about it right now, but his own birthday is in fact in November.

"Ah! Come to take advantage of the special o' the day, young doctor man?"

A faintly blank look, before Simon's eyes flick to the specials board and back.

"Oh. I hadn't even noticed."

A beat, and slightly wry: "I could produce another arrest warrant, but I'm afraid it'd be out of date by now."

"I'll take your word on it, though you're gonna have to remind me how old you're supposed to be now."

"Twenty-eight."

There's a small half-hearted smile, slowly fading.

Mal sighs gamefully, throwing the back of one hand to his forehead in a feigned effeminate swoon.

"I remember twenty-eight," he explains. "Hadn't even met you yet."

That gets a mildly curious look.

"What were you doing at twenty-eight?"

"Thievin' with Zoe -- finally saving up enough money for purchasin' a ship."

Mal smiles. "My favorite thing I ever paid for straight up. Even if it did take us far too long to find decent folk to run it with."

If by decent you include Jayne.

[simon_doctor]

Simon smiles. It's a compliment, if an elliptical one.

"Some things are worth the time they take."

Mal quiets some.

"Nice to see Kaylee back at the table."

[simon_doctor]

A distinct pause.

"Yes. She seems to be ... doing better."

The smile hasn't so much faded as gone brittle. Fragile.

"Least she's talkin' to someone at any rate.

"How about yourself?"

"...shenme?"

Simon's giving him the faintly blank look again.

"You talkin' to anybody?'

He opens his mouth, closes it, looks away.

"Not as such."
