"Unfortunately I can't honestly say that I have," says Ray, all but skidding up to the Bar, "but I could use a drink anyway. This is my third day back from 1931. Hi, um... Mal, right? Mal Reynolds? It's been a while."

"Ray?" Mal almost exclaims. "Not sure you need a drink; maybe an MRI."

The 1931 mention gets Mal's brain going again, though, and, "You got disappeared then too, didn't you? What the hell is going on around this place?"

"No, this was different," Ray says. "I got disappeared before, into Garion's world about two hundred years before he was born, but the 1931 thing is a result of me walking out the front door and into the wrong reality. The front door does that to me sometimes. Unfortunately this time I got punted back to about a hundred years before my own time and had to slog it out for longer than usual until I found a door back here- you should've seen what happened when I tried to build a door... Anyway. Have you got any Moon Shot beer back there, or Third Rail?"

"I'm sure we can arrange something."

Third Rail is what ends up being located first; upon offering it to Ray, "See, now I need to know? What happened when you tried to build a door?"

"Thanks," says Ray. "Well, um, first I got Suzi Darley back through it. That went okay. Then it overloaded, and then it sort of exploded, although not enough to leave any marks on the walls of the boarding house I was staying at. There weren't any pieces bigger than about my thumbnail by the time it was all done, so I couldn't really rebuild it, especially since several of the companies that built the relevant parts had gone out of business during the building process. And then the night after I got visited by Nyarlathotep in full-on GRR ARGH YOU DON'T GET TO LEAVE UNTIL I SAY SO mode, which, you know, not really so good for the nerves. So you can probably see why I only built the one door."

Mmm, caffeinated beer. Hooray caffeinated beer!

Mal stutters.

"Yeah. I can see that."

Mal feels suddenly as though he should have something to say that even remotely compares to what Ray's been through.

"...I painted the door o' Inara's room."

That didn't work.

"Really? What color?" asks Ray. "Seriously. Tell me something normal. I've had twenty-five years of hiding in a library trying not to get noticed by creepy things. I wanna hear normal, Mal."

"Oh, I can do normal."

For once. Right now, at the moment.

"I did the Chinese characters for her name, my name, and the ship; in orange and blue. Only colors I have that stood out against the sheet metal. She seemed to like it, anyhow."

"That sounds neat," says Ray appreciatively. "One of these days I ought to try and learn Chinese. Even if it's just the written form. Lord knows I live next to one of the biggest collections of Chinese immigrants on Earth."

"You should -- takes forever, though, I don't mind sayin'. It's at least something you can start on and see the efforts more or less immediate. I've been doing it since primary school and I haven't even gotten to some of the more advanced and particular forms of things."

"I have time," Ray says. "I have plenty of time. I'd ask for suggestions about teachers or texts, but all things considered I doubt any of them would be available in 2007."

Mal's smile grows fractionally. "Well. I'm available."

"Well then. There we go," says Ray. "At least the writing'll probably still be the same even if the dialects are different. When's good for you?"

"Hmm. I try to be around most Sundays seein's how I have bartending, so we can try for before my shift if that works?" Joking, "'Less you got some other 'verse you're going to disappear off to?"

"I should be able to manage Sundays. I really don't want to go bouncing out of my universe into another any time soon if I can avoid it. I've had quite enough of that for now, thanks."

"Sounds like -- but for now....hrm."

Mal grabs a cocktail napkin and your average ballpoint pen, scrawling some notes to himself.

"I'll bring some of my stuff next week so we can get together and figure out where to start."
