At this very moment in the town of Coeur d'Coeurs, Young Ned was 9 years, 27 weeks, 6 days, and 3 minutes old. His dog, Digby, was 3 years, 2 weeks, 6 days, 5 hours, and 9 minutes old...and not a minute older.Digby loved to play, and loved to play with Ned. Running down the hill from Ned's house, Digby crossed into a highway where an 18-wheeler ( Read more... )

There's another boy in the bar, perhaps a year older than Ned, covered in a variety of foodstuff stains and remnants, scrubbing off his head and clothes with a large fluffy white towel. He's currently muttering about not having dinner with the rest of his class, before the towel, now throughly dirtied and the boy much improved upon for it's efforts, is handed to a waitrait with a small tip.

It's right about then he notices the fellow member of the blonde and estranged and waves shyly at the boy. "Heya."

This is almost more intimidating, for Ned. Adults are supposed to be different, but this new boy is almost Ned's age. Older, only by a bit.

Ned gives a short wave, but the golden retriever at his side seems enthusiastic.

In Digby's heart of hearts, there is nothing he would want more than for someone that Ned can play with.

It takes a moment for Tyler to recognize the expression on the other boy's face. The slightly startled eyes, darting around at the other patrons, the frozen stance, despite a happy dog looking around at everyone, and smelling all of their interesting smells.

"You're new here, huh?"

Not the most charming of introductions, but it will suffice, yes?

"Yes. My name is Ned." Gesturing to his dog, "And he's Digby. What's your name?"

"I'm Tyler Marlocke, pleased to meet both of you." Tyler offers a hand for the dog to sniff. "I've been coming here for a couple of months, this place is called Milliways. It's kind of a magic bar at the end of the multiverse."

Ned is more inclined to believe in magic today, so he doesn't question the boy.

"How did we get here? We used to be outside home."

"Chances are the door opened up for you in some random doorway or space. First time it happened to me was after the recess bell at school." Tyler explains. "There's a couple of rules though, and I have a question for your door. Can you still see it?"

It is a rather pressing matter if Ned cannot see the door anymore.

It may require the easing of angst via the consumption of heavily sugared foods. Namely smoothies of the Mad Dag variety.

Ned points toward the door he had just used to arrive in Milliways, safe and sound and a reminder he can leave.

"Is it supposed to be hidden?"

"No, but if you turn around to find it gone, it means you're stuck here for a while. It's called being Bound." He shrugged. "Dunno why it happens to some people."

Ned can't imagine being locked away from his home, his train set and his mother.

His mother.

"I'm going to be late for dinner!"

"Oh! No you won't, see the moment you step through the door, Time usually freezes on the side your came in from." Tyler says quickly. "It's a handy trick, here, try opening the door and throwing some pennies into the air."

Ned reaches into his pocket, eager to try the experiment.

"Do paper clips count instead?"

"Whatever is small, handy, and more likely to fall quickly." Tyler nods, the paperclips will do fine for this experiment.

Ned uncurls his hand, revealing four paper clips. Walking to the door, he reaches for the knob and lets the entrance fall open wide.

The grass is the first thing Ned notices. It's not even swaying under the breeze Ned knows was blowing when he left.

He throws the paperclips, and resists the desire to close his eyes as they fall to the ---

they don't fall.

Tyler is not touching Ned, so he can not see the results of his experiment, but from his own experience and Ned's dazed expression, the same result has happened.

"Time'll start moving again when you go back through your door. The paperclips will fall then too." He says. "So you can spend all the time you want playing here and not be late for dinner."

Digby seems to approve.

Ned is still confused.

"And what do you do here for fun?"
