The greenhouse was already damaged when he returned to Milliways-
And it still has not been touched. Considering how much Mary cared for her plants, Wellard would have been expecting her to camp out in said greenhouse until it was repaired. Since he has not seen her at all, well... that seems to him plenty of cause for worrying.
It is also cause for poking around the greenhouse, and trying to figure out what may have caused the damage as he cleans up a bit.
