When Valerie comes into the bar, she stares a little. It's hard to miss, after all.

"Hello," says Artie. "Are you familiar with National Coming Out Day?"

"I'm not," she replies, coming closer. "I don't think they had it in Britain."

"It's possible," admits Artie. "What year are you from? It was founded in 1988."

"2018. Things . . . changed. Where I'm from."

She shakes her head, tucking her hair back behind her ear.

Artie looks sympathetic. "Parents didn't take it well?"

She shrugs. "It's not exactly a unique story, is it."

"No. My coming-out didn't go very well, either."

Well, in situations like that, you're probably not going to get a better time.

"More power to you doing this, then," she says, nodding at the sign.

That was Artie's thinking at the time, yes.

"Thank you, Miss--ah, I didn't get your name..."

"Valerie."

She offers a hand. "Just Valerie. And you're . . .?"

"Arthur Meriono, but call me 'Artie'."

He shakes the offered hand. "It was nice to meet you, Valerie."
