Yes, it is night. Fairly late.
Some people could argue that a couch by the fireplace, in relative poor lighting, is not a place for reading.
Most of the time, they would be right; but for the demi-lich, a creature of darkness, the dim light is more than bright enough.
Of course, the glowing eyes might make some people wary.
