Well, speak of the Devil. Or Angel, in this case. A largish stack of file folders appears across the table from Danny, followed by the aforementioned Inspector.

"Hey."

[badboybutterman]

The stack of file folders landing on the table startles him from shoving a forkful of minced meat into his mouth. He looks up.

"Oh, hey!" His expression is bright and happy but as soon as he looks back down at the file folders, it fades a bit. "Oh. Hey."

"Don't worry, I only brought it to work on later. I think most of them just need to be signed, anyway."

He sits, sighing softly.

Danny nods, relieved. "Oh, that's good..."

He then works up a bit of nerve to ask him something, gauging by Nicholas's demeanor whether or not he'd agree to such a thing. Worth a shot.

"Um, Nick? You know how I'm a big football fan an' all..."

He glances up at him for a reaction.

"I seem to recall you mentioning it once or twice."

If by 'once or twice,' you mean A LOT.

"Yeah... Well, see, the new season starts in August, and I've always made it a point to go up to Bristol for the opening game, but this year the stadium there is undergoing reconstruction, so the Rovers're playing home games in Cheltenham which ain't too far away from here, an' I was just wondering if I could take a couple days off to go see 'em an' if you wanted to come with me."

...He nibbles his bottom lip.

He eyes the paperwork pile wearily. The idea of getting away for a while has a certain appeal right at the moment.

"I don't see why not. As long as I can make a dent in this backlog first."

The only thing Danny hears is 'why not.'

"Really? You'll come with me?"

He honestly didn't think he'd say yes to that bit.

He blinks. Danny's taking this awfully seriously.

"Sure."

He reaches for one of the folders and frowns.

"I think the Andys are slipping their files in with mine. This is from before I even arrived, and I know that's not my handwriting."

! ... !! ..

Clearly Nicholas does not understand the magnitude of this situation. This...this? This is Football.

Danny grabs the folder from Nick's hands and puts it back down on the pile, and he looks him in the eye.

"Nobody's ever wanted to come with me to the opening game before."

He blinks. Again. He's not sure if that's a sadder comment on Danny's social life or his own.

"Yes, well. Happy to."

Nicholas still doesn't get it. But then again, he hasn't ever seen Danny watch a football match on TV yet. He's just as into it as when he watches the climax of Point Break.

A slow grin spreads across his face at the thought of Nicholas becoming a Rovers fan.

"That's just grand."

There's something about Danny's enthusiasm that's just... highly enjoyable.

"August, right? We'll have to make sure things are running smoothly by then."

He nods vigorously. "Oh, they will be. With you in charge now, I'm sure of it."

That was so totally not ass-kissing because he means it!

"Thanks."

He knows it's not, and the vote of confidence is genuinely appreciated. He opens another folder.

"As soon as we get home, someone's getting some remedial filing lessons."

[badboybutterman]

Danny ruefully eyes the stack of folders, knowing that some of his own are most likely in there, too.

"I promise I'll get better at keeping up with paperwork. ...Starting tomorrow."
