There's a policemanofficer in the bar.

Danny's off-duty, though, way way way off-duty, and he's having dinner by himself (although he'd rather be having dinner with Nicholas right now but apparently Milliways didn't see fit to pull them in together like usual so WHATEVS) of a nice steak-and-veggie pasty with a side of baked beans. Syal stares at his plate from the next table over.

She's seen a lot of strange foods in her life -- she can't remember how many different planets she's been to -- but she's never seen little bean-shaped things in bright orange sauce like that.

(The pasty looks good, though.)

He shoves a forkful of beans into his mouth when he notices that the blonde lady sitting over there is staring at him. ...Okay, no, well, not him, but his plate. He wipes his mouth with a napkin and catches her eye, giving her a little nod and smile.

Her eyes widen a little -- she's been caught staring! -- and then she grins ruefully.

"Sorry, I was just wondering -- what are they?"

He blinks, bewildered for a moment, since she looks like an Earthling, and usually all humans know what beans-from-a-tin are. Maybe she's a human from a land that doesn't have beans-from-a-tin.

"Wot, these?" He points with his fork to the little bits swilling in thick orange sauce. "They're baked beans. Very tasty, they go good with nearly everything. Well, maybe not everything, but they def'nitely go good with this." And he points to the quarter-eaten pasty, a mixture of minced meat and vegetables spilling out of the crispy crust.

"Baked beans," Syal echoes, and shifts her chair over a little to peer at them. "But why are they orange? Are they supposed to be for children or something?"

There's nothing wrong with that, of course. She just thinks bright colours = children.

"--the pie thing looks good though," she adds quickly.

He laughs brightly at that and shrugs. "I dunno, they're orange cos they're orange, but I guess that'd certainly encourage kids to eat them. They're actually kinda sweet, too. And this pasty is good, just like they make 'em back home."
