She's seen a lot of strange foods in her life -- she can't remember how many different planets she's been to -- but she's never seen little bean-shaped things in bright orange sauce like that.
(The pasty looks good, though.)

"Sorry, I was just wondering -- what are they?"

"Wot, these?" He points with his fork to the little bits swilling in thick orange sauce. "They're baked beans. Very tasty, they go good with nearly everything. Well, maybe not everything, but they def'nitely go good with this." And he points to the quarter-eaten pasty, a mixture of minced meat and vegetables spilling out of the crispy crust.

There's nothing wrong with that, of course. She just thinks bright colours = children.
