Elisa entered the Bar in full dress uniform. Ramrod straight and grim looking, she glanced around the bar before removing her hat. The door had obviously caught her on a bad dayThat didn't seem to matter though, as she stalked toward the bar and pulled a small plastic bag full of charred plastic bits and ash. She'd been carrying the thing around ( Read more... )

It's hard to miss a cop to begin with, let alone one in full dress. (Odd how the full dress uniform of the NYPD is very similar to that of the GCPD.) Knox then sees who's wearing the uniform. There are very few reasons a detective wears the blue, most of them not good. Some downright tragic.

So he just waves to her from his chair by the fireplace, and lets her decide if she can stand a member of the press today.

'Downright tragic' was a really good word for the day, week, situation...

She noted the wave with a cool nod, and when she'd gotten a few aspirin from Bar and a glass of water she wandered over. Why? Well, she wasn't being incredibly social, admittedly, but sitting down was a good idea...and it got her away from the temptation of alcohol "Hello, Alex."

"Detective." He gives her a very tentative smile. "How are you doing?" Somewhere along the line, he learned sensitivity in regard to members of law enforcement (or at least the honest ones). Maybe dating a Fed back in the 80s helped.

She eyed the aspirin in her hand, finding some kind of solace in the smooth, white pills before she tossed them back. "Been a bad few weeks" she admitted. She'd not be taking it out on anyone, least of all him.

"Few weeks back there was a shipment of prototype lasers that went missing. They were taken care of, but the thieves sold off a portion on the street. We don't have the technology to combat it" or the body armor...

"Oh lord, " he says softly. "They must have the whole force working overtime. And..." He pauses and plows on. "Someone died in the line of duty thanks to this wonder of the age?"

"Five" she answered grimly. "With eight more injured." it was a hell of a blow. Five from different shifts and ranks, yes, but five.

"The gangs are passing them around. We can't catch the guns." she ground out, hand clenching around the water glass. Was it any wonder she'd actually started recruiting from the Bar, no matter how hard it'd be to explain?

"Oh crap. Ohhhh crap." Knox just stares randomly for a moment. He can't quite make himself look at Maza. He's just a civilian, and she...she's lost colleagues, friends possibly, in a war. "I'm sorry. And I bet that sounds really trite, but I don't have anything else I can say." And for once, he is glad that there are some stories he will never have to write.

He was right, for a moment, it did sound trite. And she almost snapped at him...almost. She sipped her water instead and finally sighed. "Hey...thanks." she offered at last.

It was nice to know someone outside the force, and their families, was sorry about it.

"Look...I'm sure the last person you need in your face is a reporter. So if you want me to go away, that's fine. But if you want to talk..." Truth be told, that's a ploy he used a few times on grieving widows and co-workers. He means it here, but he truly thought he meant it then, too. The cynic and decent human in Knox weave together strangely.

"I kinda assumed you weren't here in official capacity pal" she almost smiled at him. She didn't hold the reporter fact against him really, he wasn't one of the bad ones in her books.

"And talking just...I still have another funeral to go to today, so I think I'll skip that, but if you want to volunteer as a distraction? Maybe play some checkers or something?"

He almost says like I can be very distracting. Ask my girlfriend.. But this isn't the time even for harmless flirtation.

"Checkers is good. Just don't ask me for chess. I never did learn all the pieces, or the moves."

"I'm picking up chess, slowly, from a friend of mine" she admitted with a hint of chagrin. It was one of those game she should have known right?

"Checkers is just from a better time..." Bar had a board! She was really starting to like this place admittedly.

He helps set the board up on a small table between the lamps that he never noticed before. "I used to play checkers as a kid. Used to clobber my brother, in fact. But it's been ages."

"Yeah, I used to play with my brother too. Our schedules don't really match up now, so I can't promise to be up to par either" she admitted, setting her next to her so she'd have her hands free.

Hmmm. So, he thinks, she's one of those women who seeks solace from chocolate and not beer. (He wonders what Rapunzel would prefer, but hopes he never needs to find out.) Well, that's okay. He likes chocolate too.

"OK, but it has to be the good stuff. Not Hershey's.

"You want to be red or black?"

wingless_clan August 2 2007, 17:12:32 UTC
Beer was for relaxing after a long day, but it was way too dangerous to indulge in when things went past 'long' into 'bad'.

"Deal. We'll ask Bar to get creative?" Bar would never offer up Hershey's. She was certain of that.

"Black, please." she disliked going first really.
